These days, it&#8217;s whether a minimal one can run Doom. We&#8217;ve seen an affirmative answer to this question when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/you-can-technically-play-doom-on-a-usd30-vape-and-it-just-needs-that-last-bit-of-ram-to-run-natively\/\" target=\"_blank\">vapes<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/doom-coreboot-coredoom\/\" target=\"_blank\">motherboard BIOS<\/a>, and even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/heres-doom-running-on-a-pregnancy-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">pregnancy test<\/a>. And now? A DNS database.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, we&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/networking\/the-most-boring-protocol-on-the-internet-is-also-quietly-one-of-the-most-abusable-doom-has-been-broken-down-into-1-964-dns-text-records-and-can-be-run-via-a-powershell-script\/\" target=\"_blank\">seen Doom broken down into DNS text records before<\/a>, but this time it seems like the database is doing more than file storage. This new version is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/columnists\/2026\/10\/12\/no-shame-in-the-domain-name-game-dns-is-doomed-literally\/5302670\" target=\"_blank\">courtesy of Corey Quinn over at The Register<\/a>, who explains: &#8220;I have compiled Doom for a 32-bit machine whose arithmetic and memory live in DNS.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DNS, for those unaware, means &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domain_Name_System\" target=\"_blank\">domain name system<\/a>&#8216;, and is the system that translates URLs into IP addresses that computers can actually interact with to visit. You can also create your own DNS databases with your own entries. <\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;\">\n<div class=\"kwizly-quiz kwizly-eGbQVX\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <script src=\"https:\/\/kwizly.com\/embed\/eGbQVX.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Quinn realised that such a database could be used essentially as a &#8220;librarian&#8221;, pulling pre-made answers to relevant operations: &#8220;The database itself is 6.4 million rows of truth tables.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of the main pioneers of DNS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/paulvixie_i-cant-decide-whether-this-is-deliciously-share-7514785302016589824-K-De\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Vixie, said<\/a>: &#8220;I can&#8217;t decide whether this is deliciously horrible, or else horribly delicious. in either case, it&#8217;s the best use of RFC 2136 DNS UPDATE that I&#8217;ve ever seen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DNS UPDATE is what allows DNS records to be changed, which is also what&#8217;s required for values and variables to change and be updated in a game world. That&#8217;s the key trick here, as far as I can tell: Quinn realised there&#8217;s enough similarity in the way DNS works to essentially replicate the usual conditional &#8216;if this, then this&#8217; way that code works.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:1920px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"hGepsyz5Aiffh5UJCnSbjN\" name=\"doom cover\" alt=\"Doom (1993) key art depicting Doom Guy shooting at hordes of demons clawing at him from below.\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/doom-can-run-on-a-dns-database-now-and-one-of-the-technologys-pioneers-says-i-cant-decide-whether-this-is-deliciously-horrible-or-else-horribly-delicious.jpg\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"inline\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: id Software)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;I want to be very clear here: this isn&#8217;t DNS pretending to be a CPU.&#8221; says Quinn. &#8220;The instruction decoding is done ahead of time by a compiler; BIND never executes an instruction itself. All that it sees is a key-value read, a conditional write, and 6.4 million rows of precomputed answers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not really a computer; it&#8217;s simply a very good database. And that turns out to be enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, that&#8217;s right: 6.4 million rows. And it&#8217;s hardly a snappy experience, as one update takes just over 54 seconds: &#8220;Doom says its tic rate is 35 per second, so &#8216;playable&#8217; is a tic every 28.6 ms. I remain at 54,000 ms, which is three orders of magnitude away from victory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, not exactly a practical gaming experience, but certainly a fun project.
