Except this one appears to be much larger, lasted for longer, and is potentially very worrying for many civilian US government employees and serving military personnel alike.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/Politics\/pentagon-breach-exposed-sensitive-data-3-million-people\/story?id=136832909\" target=\"_blank\">According to ABC News<\/a>, the official said that the &#8220;Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) information system experienced unauthorized access of personally identifiable information by a small number of unauthorized users between October 2025 and July 2026.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dwp.dmdc.osd.mil\/dwp\/app\/main\" target=\"_blank\">DMDC<\/a> is one of the Pentagon&#8217;s main data repositories for personnel records, including info on active-duty and reserve troops, alongside civilian employees, contractors, and military veterans. All told, the breach is said to affect 2.76 million living people, and around 294,000 who are deceased.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;\">\n<div class=\"kwizly-quiz kwizly-exgvPX\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <script src=\"https:\/\/kwizly.com\/embed\/exgvPX.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Once the unauthorized access was discovered, the DMDC &#8220;immediately remediated the vulnerability.&#8221; The data is said to have included Social Security numbers and details about military and civilian job positions, but defence officials say they&#8217;ve found no evidence so far that the exposed information was misused. <\/p>\n<p>It could have been worse. The DMDC is said to hold records on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitdefender.com\/en-us\/blog\/hotforsecurity\/pentagon-personnel-database-breach-personal-data-millions#:~:text=The%20DMDC%20holds%20more%20than%2060%20million%20records%20on%20military%20troops%2C%20civilian%20employees%2C%20contractors%2C%20retirees%2C%20veterans%20and%20families%20of%20those%20who%20have%20served%20in%20the%20forces.%20So%2C%20the%20fact%20that%20only%20around%20one%20in%20twenty%20of%20the%20records%20held%20by%20the%20DMDC%20were%20exposed%20by%20the%20breach%20is%20some%20consolation.\" target=\"_blank\">more than 60 million people<\/a>, so the three million affected figure would amount to around one in twenty of the total individual records breached. It seems that no hacking group has yet claimed public responsibility for the breach.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it looks like hackers have managed to successfully breach two bastions of US government information over the past year or so, which may represent a marked escalation in their capabilities. Will 2026 be remembered as the year of the US government-bothering hacker?
