{"id":1703302,"date":"2026-09-28T01:19:40","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T01:19:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/x4ka7fUmQfP76fDJF3MVNT"},"modified":"2026-09-28T01:19:40","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T01:19:40","slug":"industry-insiders-and-tokyo-gossip-suggest-kojima-is-getting-less-money-from-xbox-than-original-playstation-budget-for-physint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcader.org\/news\/industry-insiders-and-tokyo-gossip-suggest-kojima-is-getting-less-money-from-xbox-than-original-playstation-budget-for-physint\/","title":{"rendered":"Industry insiders and Tokyo gossip suggest Kojima is getting less money from Xbox than original PlayStation budget for Physint"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<h3 id=\"the-facts\">The facts:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Hideo Kojima&#8217;s return to stealth-action, Physint, is no longer a PlayStation joint, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/playstation-tried-to-cancel-hideo-kojimas-physint-now-xbox-is-publishing-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft picked up the ball<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>It still has big Hollywood talent, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/action\/hideo-kojima-announces-bill-skarsgard-will-star-in-stealth-action-physint-legendary-designer-yoji-shinkawa-also-confirmed-for-character-design\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd in the lead role<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>That&#8217;s literally it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"what-people-are-saying\">What people are saying:<\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"alright-so-what-does-that-mean\">Alright, so what does that mean?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Both Corden and Schreier&#8217;s sources suggest Kojima Productions is working on a tighter budget with Microsoft than it was with Sony<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s unclear how much had already been spent on Physint, and how much of the work on it is transferable\u2014Kojima Productions presumably no longer has access to Sony&#8217;s proprietary Decima Engine, for example.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesradar.com\/games\/action\/death-stranding-games-broke-even-but-not-by-much-analyst-says-which-may-explain-why-sony-axed-physint-despite-it-being-hideo-kojimas-metal-gear-successor\/\" target=\"_blank\">GamesRadar<\/a> quoted a rumored budget for Death Stranding 2 &#8220;somewhere between $150-200 million.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Insomniac&#8217;s Spider-Man 2, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/paultassi\/2023\/12\/21\/a-300-million-spider-man-2-budget-sonys-future-and-aaa-unsustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\">leaked budget of $300 million<\/a>, is widely agreed to have been an expensive gamble for PlayStation.<\/li>\n<li>Scooping Kojima was a PR victory for Xbox amid its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/xbox-lays-off-268-more-employees-merges-obsidian-into-bethesda-and-puts-activision-in-charge-of-halo\/\" target=\"_blank\">unpopular, studio-killing &#8220;Reset,&#8221;<\/a> but its continued financial woes would give them incentive for doing it on the cheap.<\/li>\n<li>Whether Sony pulling out was a surprise as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/hideo-kojima-says-he-was-shocked-after-sony-cut-ties-with-physint-over-a-zoom-call-nothing-couldve-prepared-me-for-their-decision-to-step-away-from-the-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kojima says<\/a>, or preceded by months of negotiations, as alleged by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-09-11\/hideo-kojima-s-physint-video-game-dropped-by-playstation-goes-to-xbox\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a>, Kojima would not have been negotiating from a place of strength with Microsoft\u2014his studio&#8217;s health and employees&#8217; livelihoods were on the line.<\/li>\n<li>None of this strikes me as conducive to making a good videogame under healthy, happy working conditions.<\/li>\n<li>I really stuck on Schreier&#8217;s phrasing, &#8220;certain A-list actors attached,&#8221; regarding Physint. The game&#8217;s first public image of its protagonist looks way more like Robert Pattinson than Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd.
