The accounts come from The Verge&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/999919\/microsoft-xbox-reorganization-activision-notepad\">Tom Warren<\/a> (longtime Microsoft beat writer) and YouTuber <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/doDGO91IyoA\">Rebs Gaming<\/a> (whose sources within the Halo machine are often accurate).<\/p>\n<div class=\"card card--standard card--rows-3 card--align-inline\">\n<div class=\"card-image-widthsetter\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%\" class=\"card__image\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/what-insiders-say-halo-studios-was-up-to-before-losing-halo-the-next-halo-game-was-years-away.jpg\" alt=\"Halo Infinite Mark V armor\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"card__content\">\n<h3 class=\"card__title\">According to sources<\/h3>\n<div class=\"card__description-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"card__description\">\n<ul>\n<li>The drastic cuts were a surprise to some Halo Studios employees, who had to wait hours to learn if they still had a job: &#8220;The first communication came in a public Xbox blog, before notifications were sent to employees throughout the morning.&#8221; (via Warren)<\/li>\n<li>The next mainline Halo game was, at minimum, &#8220;years&#8221; away (via Warren and Rebs)<\/li>\n<li>No games were in full production when the layoffs happened, but work on Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes, Halo 7, and &#8220;spinoff campaigns&#8221; was underway (via Rebs)<\/li>\n<li>One of the shorter spinoff games would&#8217;ve been based on the First Strike novel, to be released between remakes (via Rebs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rebs&#8217; source also claimed that Halo Studios is now around 30 people, with Warren noting that they&#8217;ll be servicing existing Halo games Infinite and Campaign Evolved. Meanwhile, Activision is building a new studio dedicated to the future of Halo.<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging that there&#8217;s always more to a story than a handful of sources can cover, the picture they paint sounds <em>very<\/em> Halo Studios: slow-moving, scattered, and with one foot firmly in Halo&#8217;s past. We all assumed that more remakes were in the cards, but that&#8217;s looking less likely now\u2014considering the many ways Campaign Evolved was a step back from the original, I can&#8217;t decide if this is a relief of a missed opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>It is sad that these people won&#8217;t get a crack at Halo 7, because for all its delays and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/halo-infinites-terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad-year\/\">live-service fumbles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/halo-infinite-season-5-has-the-makings-of-an-honest-to-god-comeback\/\">Halo Infinite grew<\/a> into the best Halo since the Bungie days, and even outshined its original makers in some respects.
