As cool as the tech is, that hardware remains an expensive niche within the increasingly pricey PC gaming landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Global VR headset shipments apparently declined by 18% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, according to the latest data from <a href=\"https:\/\/counterpointresearch.com\/en\/insights\/global-xr-ar-vr-headsets-market-share-quarterly\" target=\"_blank\">Counterpoint Research<\/a>. That doesn&#8217;t surprise me\u2014though it&#8217;s also not great news for Valve or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/vr-hardware\/valve-appears-to-implementing-a-reservation-system-for-the-steam-frame-and-we-all-know-how-well-that-worked-last-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">potentially imminent release<\/a> of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/vr-hardware\/steam-frame-specs-availability\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steam Frame<\/a> VR headset.<\/p>\n<p>A dearth of major game releases is one reason why VR headsets aren&#8217;t the most in-demand hardware. For instance, Valve&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/half-life-alyx-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Half-Life: Alyx<\/a> remains an unsurpassed high bar six-years after release. Counterpoint Research also highlights that VR isn&#8217;t immune to the same pricing pressures as the rest of consumer hardware, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/vr-hardware\/meta-is-raising-the-price-of-the-quest-3-and-quest-3s-due-to-memory-price-rises-made-worse-by-meta\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meta\u2019s decision to raise the price Quest 3 and Quest 3S<\/a> due to the memory supply crisis as adding &#8220;further pressure to an already cooling market.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;\">\n<div class=\"kwizly-quiz kwizly-Xm8v0O\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <script src=\"https:\/\/kwizly.com\/embed\/Xm8v0O.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly though, VR appears to enjoy consistent demand from businesses. &#8220;Enterprises and governments are generally less price-sensitive than consumers when adopting VR\u2019s digital twin and spatial computing capabilities to address operational challenges and enhance productivity,&#8221; Counterpoint Research says. &#8220;Meanwhile, driven by the continued development of the robotics industry, particularly in China, demand for VR headsets used for data collection and remote robot control is expected to grow this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Contrastingly AR devices, like Meta&#8217;s smart glasses, have had an incredible year. &#8220;Global shipments of AR devices surged 138% [year-on-year] and 10% [quarter-on-quarter] in Q2 2026, driven by new product launches, international expansion by OEMs, and China\u2019s 6.18 promotional campaigns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:4032px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"qu8Dh8qBDoAfMMNNYGvUBJ\" name=\"IMG_1807 (1).jpg\" alt=\"Meta Quest 3 headset on my head.\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/vr-headset-shipments-are-down-18-compared-to-this-time-last-year-and-that-may-not-be-great-news-for-valve.jpg\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"2268\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"inline\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Future)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meta is easily the largest player in this space outside of China, with a 54% share of the AR\/VR OEM market in the second quarter of 2026. There&#8217;s definitely a lot I could say about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/insta-dox-meta-smart-glasses\/\" target=\"_blank\">privacy concerns<\/a> surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/we-see-everything-report-says-metas-ai-smart-glasses-footage-is-reviewed-by-human-contractors-who-see-far-more-than-they-bargained-for-which-has-led-to-a-new-lawsuit-against-the-company\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meta&#8217;s smart glasses<\/a>\u2014not to mention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/vr-hardware\/meta-is-still-flinging-the-equivalent-of-a-small-countrys-annual-gdp-down-the-reality-labs-money-pit-each-and-every-quarter\/\" target=\"_blank\">the money pit that is Reality Labs<\/a>\u2014but allow me to start bringing things back to Valve.<\/p>\n<p>As far as we&#8217;re concerned, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/best-vr-headset\/#section-the-best-budget-vr-headset\" target=\"_blank\">the best VR headset overall<\/a> is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/meta-quest-3-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meta Quest 3<\/a>, which will now set you back $600 at least. The best budget option, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/vr-hardware\/meta-quest-3s-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meta Quest 3S<\/a>, now costs $350. Given the already mentioned RAMpocalypse, it will be impressive if Valve can offer its latest VR challenger at a price point that can compete. But given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/gaming-pcs\/the-steam-machine-is-the-biggest-victim-of-the-rampocalypse-to-date-and-thats-made-me-unreasonably-annoyed\/\" target=\"_blank\">the pricing woes of the Steam Machine amid this here memory supply crisis<\/a>, that could be a struggle.<\/p>\n<p>Given that recent data mining suggests that, rather than making a debut with something new, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/vr-hardware\/no-half-life-3-for-the-steam-frame-so-it-looks-like-this-six-year-old-game-might-be-the-key-launch-offering-instead\/\" target=\"_blank\">the aforementioned six-year-old game might be the key launch offering instead<\/a>, I&#8217;m a little unsure about Valve&#8217;s footing. If you&#8217;re already all-in on VR, then you&#8217;ve likely already got the hardware and you already loved Half-Life: Alyx when it first came out\u2014but is the Steam Frame keeping a trick up its sleeve to justify Valve re-entering the &#8216;cooling&#8217; VR market?
