The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/game-pads\/steam-controller-2026-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steam Controller<\/a> is no exception, as creator Owen Feldman has managed to get classic text adventure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/classic-text-adventure-zork-is-going-open-source-but-im-side-eyeing-microsofts-announcement-about-it-hard\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zork<\/a> running on its internal hardware.<\/p>\n<p>Feldman has documented the project <a href=\"https:\/\/owenfeldman.com\/Reverse%20Engineering\/Steam%20Controller%202026\/\" target=\"_blank\">on their blog<\/a>, but it wasn&#8217;t always a smooth ride to convince the controller to play ball (via <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2026\/08\/20\/running-zork-on-the-steam-controller\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hackaday<\/a>). An internal tool discovered within a Steam hardware updater folder was used to flash the firmware\u2014but Feldman managed to <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/safijari\/openpuck\/discussions\/185#discussioncomment-17733791\" target=\"_blank\">temporarily brick their controller<\/a> in the process.<\/p>\n<p>After recovering the controller, a custom Rust-based program was used to emulate an Intel 8080 CPU and run the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CP\/M\" target=\"_blank\">CP\/M-80<\/a> operating system on the Steam Controller&#8217;s internal processor. As the device has no keyboard or screen, the built-in USB connection was used for I\/O streaming purposes.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;\">\n<div class=\"kwizly-quiz kwizly-e47VRX\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <script src=\"https:\/\/kwizly.com\/embed\/e47VRX.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>So, what do you do first when you&#8217;ve successfully convinced a controller to emulate a CPU and run an OS all on its own? Well, you play games on it, of course. <\/p>\n<p>A floppy disk (hey, remember those?) copy of Zork was used to load the game via an external drive, resulting in a Steam Controller rig that&#8217;s been connected to a remarkable number of add-on devices. Feldman describes the process of creating the custom program as &#8220;1514 lines of pain,&#8221; but what they&#8217;ve ended up with is the PC hardware equivalent of a magic trick. Who knew the Steam Controller could play games in its own right?<\/p>\n<p>However, I think I&#8217;ll be leaving this Steam Controller-flashing method well alone, and not just because my Rust coding abilities are non-existent.
