The move comes after the company\u2019s new CEO recently reaffirmed its <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/02\/04\/amazons-new-ceo-pledges-support-for-game-making-division\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span><span>commitment to game development<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>. The new studio will be focused on AAA game development and joins Amazon\u2019s existing studios in Seattle, San Diego, and Orange County.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>According to Amazon\u2019s <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazongames.com\/en-us\/news\/articles\/amazon-games-opens-development-studio-montreal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span><span>press release<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>, the Montreal studio is actively hiring and is helmed\u00a0by veteran designers who once formed the core of the development team for Rainbow Six\u00a0Siege. With\u00a0that kind of expertise in its pocket, Amazon states that the Montreal team\u2019s first project will be a new online multiplayer title.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201cBuilding upon 8 years of experience with Siege, we are excited to start with a blank page and the creative freedom to create a unique experience in the multiplayer space,\u201d said Xavier Marquis, Creative Director of the Montreal studio.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u201cMontreal&#8217;s rich vein of creative talent will be a valuable asset as we continue building our development and publishing teams,\u201d said Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Games in the press release. \u201cThe highly skilled and experienced team at our new Montreal studio shares our commitment to creating best-in-class online games and brings with them a wealth of knowledge and passion for building deep, community-focused multiplayer experiences. I look forward to watching them invent on behalf of customers as they grow their team and develop their first project.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>While it\u2019s nice to see Amazon\u2019s commitment to games in action, the company&#8217;s initial projects have had a rough time getting off the ground. Their first released game, the free-to-play hero shooter Crucible, didn\u2019t catch on, and Amazon <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2020\/10\/12\/amazon-games-pulls-the-plug-on-crucible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span><span>pulled the plug<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> on it only a few months after it launched. Meanwhile, its upcoming MMO New World looks promising but has suffered a few <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/02\/16\/amazon-game-studios-new-world-delayed-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span><span>delays<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> and is currently slated to release this August. On the plus side, Amazon recently launched its <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2020\/09\/24\/amazon-launches-luna-a-cloud-gaming-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span><span>Luna streaming service<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> as a competitor of sorts to Google Stadia. While Luna seems positioned as a fundamentally better deal compared to Stadia&#8217;s model (in that it&#8217;s a Netflix style subscription service\u00a0versus Stadia&#8217;s &#8220;buy games individually&#8221; approach), it&#8217;s\u00a0too early to tell whether or not it can be deemed a success as of yet.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>What do you make of Amazon\u2019s current positioning in the game industry?
