I feel a little bad about spoiling this, but the word is already out and besides, it’s kind of my job: It looks like Frictional Games is working on a new version of its horror masterpiece Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and it might be out later this year.<\/p>\n

Word of the update slipped out through Frictional’s latest annual report, which was released in June but went unnoticed until redditor CarlZzZoneNnn<\/a> (via Insider Gaming<\/a>) got bored and started browsing through it. I dug into it myself, aided by Google Translate, and after some poking around I found what I was looking for here<\/a>. After saying Frictional’s focus has been on Ontos<\/a>, the studio’s next big horror game, it adds, “We also plan to release a new version of Amnesia: The Dark Descent in late 2026.” That’s the extent of it and it’s not much to go on\u2014Frictional may just be hammering away on a Switch 2 port, or maybe a Roblox edition or… whatever.<\/p>\n

But maybe\u2014maybe\u2014we’re all going to get to partake in some sort of updated Dark Descent good times: A remake, a remaster, or something that compels us to dive back into that magnificently horrific nightmare. Obviously that’s what I’m hoping for. <\/p>\n

Assuming that’s the case (and I feel like its inclusion in an annual financial report suggests something more significant than just another platform port) it’ll be interesting to see how Dark Descent holds up. Frictional’s approach to horror has matured dramatically since then, and so has its audience, and that classic Amnesia gameplay isn’t as novel now as it was then. <\/p>\n

But there’s just no overstating how impactful that game was: After building up to it through the Penumbra trilogy, Frictional absolutely knocked it out of the park with The Dark Descent, creating one of the most viscerally terrifying videogames of all time. <\/p>\n
