Sony’s decision to stop producing game discs<\/a> in 2028 has caused a real uproar. Some PlayStation owners see a dire future as they become dependent on digital services and lose the ability to trade old games in for new ones, while at least one analyst says we’ll all get used to it<\/a> quickly enough anyway. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has now weighed into the debate, and he’s clearly in the “no big deal” camp.<\/p>\n

Guillemot was asked during today’s quarterly investors call if Sony’s decision might create “a demand headwind,” because of the loss of the secondary market for PlayStation games.<\/p>\n

“What we saw on the PC is that it helped to grow the market,” Guillemot said, presumably a reference to the explosive growth of Steam that drove a stake through the heart of physical PC game releases.<\/p>\n

“There’s also some pressure for the future on the cost of machines, and being able to be only digital will help to have more accessible machines, I would say. There are pluses and minuses, but we think it will not disturb the industry too much.”<\/p>\n

The impact of Steam on the evolution of PC gaming is obvious and undeniable, and while you might argue that it’s not entirely a good thing (I certainly would), PC gamers are absolutely eating well these days\u2014at least as long as you don’t need to upgrade your rig. Sure, we can’t take our old stuff down to GameStop and trade them in for new releases, but we do get regular, ridiculous deep discounts on Steam (and GOG, Humble, Epic, and numerous others) that pretty nicely balance the scales.<\/p>\n

But the implied comparison strikes me as flawed. Consoles are walled gardens, and the PlayStation Store is very tightly controlled in ways that Steam never has been, even before it decided that (just about) anything goes. The likelihood of Sony loosening its grip in the all-digital future does not strike me as particularly good, and without that I think outcomes will also be different.<\/p>\n

Expectations are different, too: The end of physical releases on PC was never mandated by any central authority, and the wheels started turning on the process well before gaming became the mainstream at-home entertainment it is now. How much impact will the absence of an optical drive have on costs? I do not know. It will presumably give Sony a little extra flexibility on pricing, but I wouldn’t expect it to surrender any more of its bottom line than it has to.<\/p>\n

Despite all of that, Guillemot is probably correct. If Sony sticks to its guns\u2014and it surely will\u2014then the only options we have are to either roll with it or go outside and find something else to do. Whether or not it’s a good thing for gamers is a whole different question, and maybe it’ll be a bumpier ride than I (and Yves) expect\u2014on that one, we’ll just have to wait and see.<\/p>\n
