That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s particularly nice to see people save their old hardware with a little ingenuity, and one Redditor&#8217;s dad used a whole heaping of it recently. <\/p>\n<p>As spotted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/pc-components\/gpus\/ingenious-father-fixes-dead-rtx-3070-with-a-jerry-rigged-capacitor-from-an-old-radio-saves-worried-son-usd120-in-repair-costs-gpu-works-better-than-before-now\" target=\"_blank\">Tom&#8217;s Hardware<\/a>, user External_Length_8877 took to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/SerbiaGaming\/comments\/1uiq4i0\/stara_%C5%A1kola_elektri%C4%8Dara_najbolja\/?tl=en&#038;utm_source=embedv2&#038;utm_medium=post_embed&#038;utm_content=whitespace&#038;embed_host_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tomshardware.com%2Fpc-components%2Fgpus%2Fingenious-father-fixes-dead-rtx-3070-with-a-jerry-rigged-capacitor-from-an-old-radio-saves-worried-son-usd120-in-repair-costs-gpu-works-better-than-before-now\" target=\"_blank\">SerbiaGaming<\/a> subreddit recently to share that their dad ripped a capacitor from an old radio to replace the broken one in their RTX 3070, saving 12,000 dinars (around $115) in the process. <\/p>\n<p>In the process, the dad also swapped out the thermal paste for one used on high-voltage lines, and the original poster claims, &#8220;Now it runs better than before the repair.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;\">\n<div class=\"kwizly-quiz kwizly-eJqMEX\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <script src=\"https:\/\/kwizly.com\/embed\/eJqMEX.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The only downside so far is that the capacitor from the radio is bulkier than the original capacitor, so it now hangs outside of the GPU. That means you can see it noticeably on the side, and it also means it may struggle in a super tight case, but one can expect some hits to performance if your parts are super cramped anyway. <\/p>\n<p>The Redditor claims the GPU hits &#8220;No more than 80 \u00b0C during Spider-Man on ultra graphics settings without frame generation. Maximum load\u2014up to 99% on GPU and CPU. And temperatures\u2014no more than 80 \u00b0C on GPU and 75 \u00b0C on CPU.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those aren&#8217;t exactly low figures, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/SerbiaGaming\/comments\/1uiq4i0\/comment\/ouhv5fm\/?utm_source=share&#038;utm_medium=web3x&#038;utm_name=web3xcss&#038;utm_term=1&#038;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\">Redditor claims<\/a> they were going above 100 \u00b0C during stress and 80 \u00b0C+ without stress prior to the swap. It seems like the paste is the real winner here. But the important thing is that the GPU works now. <\/p>\n<p>And, I personally like the DIY angle of jamming in your own capacitor, even if it makes the card look less clean. If taking apart a radio and learning about GPUs will save you up to hundreds of dollars, it&#8217;s a great skill to hone.
