Welcome to a daily part of my life. The good news is that YouTube has listened to user feedback, and as a result is <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/news-and-events\/improving-ai-labels-viewers-creators\/\" target=\"_blank\">moving AI disclosure labels<\/a> for photorealistic and &#8220;meaningfully AI altered or generated&#8221; content to a &#8220;more prominent&#8221; position.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news is, the labels look pretty tiny in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/r99O5TAKM1E\" target=\"_blank\">promo video<\/a>. The AI warnings will now sit directly below the video player for long-form AI-generated videos, above the description. For short form, it&#8217;s an actual overlay on the video itself. Which is indeed, a prominent position.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-video\" data-nosnippet >\n<div class=\"video-aspect-box\"><iframe data-lazy-priority=\"low\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/r99O5TAKM1E\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But yes, both versions still look like they&#8217;d be easy to miss. I suppose a big honking &#8220;THIS VIDEO IS BULL****&#8221; with red flashing warning signals on either side would be a bit much, but I&#8217;m not sure it does much to assuage fears that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/average-briton-struggles-identify-deepfakes-b2979372.html\" target=\"_blank\">AI-generated videos are becoming harder to spot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;\">\n<div class=\"kwizly-quiz kwizly-O6jx1O\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <script src=\"https:\/\/kwizly.com\/embed\/O6jx1O.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>What might help a little more in this regard, though, is YouTube&#8217;s other announcement\u2014that &#8220;new internal signals&#8221; will be used to help identify AI-generated content.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube creators are required to manually disclose when they use realistic AI, but I&#8217;m guessing that a fair few of them&#8230; don&#8217;t. However, in a world where YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/platforms\/youtube-raked-in-over-usd60-billion-in-revenue-last-year-says-alphabet-between-its-seemingly-endless-parade-of-adverts-and-its-premium-subscription-service\/\" target=\"_blank\">dominates the online video market<\/a> (and amid real concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2025\/dec\/27\/more-than-20-of-videos-shown-to-new-youtube-users-are-ai-slop-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\">the level of AI slop on the platform<\/a>), this new labelling system feels like small potatoes.
