In a wide-ranging discussion, the Intel head honcho credited many reasons for Intel&#8217;s recovery from its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/processors\/intels-bad-news-year-rolls-on-as-new-18a-chip-manufacturing-node-is-reportedly-in-trouble-with-10-percent-yields-and-doubts-over-profitability-of-the-panther-lake-cpu\/\" target=\"_blank\">previously shaky spot<\/a>, including a change in management style.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the past, we made a lot of mistakes, and now we correct that mistake, and we simplify the roadmap. From day one I came on board as a CEO, I have all the engineering report to me,&#8221; said Tan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They didn&#8217;t report to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/processors\/intel-ceo-pat-gelsinger-retires-leading-intel-has-been-the-honor-of-my-lifetime\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous CEO<\/a>?&#8221; asked Cramer. &#8220;No,&#8221; Tan replied. &#8220;And so, in a way, they [had] too many silos, too many people needed reporting. And even though they come to the CEO, they are not paying attention to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"min-height: 250px;\">\n<div class=\"kwizly-quiz kwizly-eM7mDO\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> <script src=\"https:\/\/kwizly.com\/embed\/eM7mDO.js\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So I decided the best thing is to really understand where the problem is,&#8221; Tan continued, &#8220;so that I can focus on the engineering, how to redesign, [how to] simplify the products, and then get the real killer product out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And by the sounds of it (and the look of Intel&#8217;s most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/processors\/this-is-a-fundamentally-different-company-today-intel-reports-strong-financial-results-says-its-upcoming-14a-process-is-already-outpacing-early-18a-yields\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent financials<\/a>), Tan&#8217;s hands-on management style appears to have worked. Addressing Intel Foundry, Tan said: &#8220;When I took over, the 18A yield [was] not good. And I had to ask some of the ecosystem partners to help me look at the data, how to improve the industry standard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:1569px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:55.77%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"gywvJokCYFrGaCdJJFwopR\" name=\"Lip-Bu Tan\" alt=\"Lip-Bu Tan conducting his keynote\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/intel-chief-in-the-past-we-made-a-lot-of-mistakes-from-day-one-i-came-on-board-as-ceo-i-have-all-the-engineering-report-to-me.png\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"\" width=\"1569\" height=\"875\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"inline\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Intel)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;The best practice is to see seven or eight percent yield improvement per month, and now I&#8217;m seeing it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Still, despite Tan&#8217;s assertion that a change of reporting at the top has made a major difference to Intel&#8217;s business, he was also quick to credit the teams underneath him\u2014along with Intel&#8217;s relationship with its customers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a lot of hard work, it&#8217;s a lot of teamwork, a lot of talent I brought on board to help,&#8221; said Tan. &#8220;It&#8217;s a service business. You need to build the trust with the customer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the topic of Intel&#8217;s customers, Tan also said the company would have risk production of its upcoming 14A process underway in 2028, and volume production in 2029. &#8220;It will be the same time as TSMC,&#8221; said Tan. &#8220;So that is a major, major breakthrough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It certainly seems so. Tan&#8217;s hands-on approach looks to have brought the company success that seemed a million miles away from reality in previous years, and with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/surprise-intel-has-teamed-up-with-elon-musk-and-his-terafab-project-to-help-refactor-silicon-fab-technology-to-give-spacex-and-tesla-1-tw-per-year-of-ai-compute\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk&#8217;s Terafab project<\/a> lining up for its 14A tech, it&#8217;s looking like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/processors\/intels-fabs-may-at-long-last-be-worth-all-those-billions-of-dollars\/\" target=\"_blank\">a bright future<\/a> for Intel if it can keep bringing in the wins. Not to mention its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/processors\/intel-and-nvidia-announce-stunning-plans-to-combine-their-cpu-and-gpu-products-for-both-consumer-pcs-and-ai-servers-with-nvidia-taking-a-usd5-billion-stake-in-intel\/\" target=\"_blank\">partnership with Nvidia<\/a>.
