The winner, CradleOS, took home $25,000 for its in-game civilization-building tool, with a remaining $55,000 split among other winners.<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain&#8217;s still a dirty word for me, but EVE Frontier is the only game I&#8217;ve seen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/sim\/eve-frontier-is-not-really-a-blockchain-game-no-more-than-eve-is-a-database-game-ccp-hopes-youll-give-crypto-a-chance-for-a-space-sim-with-tactical-combat-bordering-on-survival-horror\/\" target=\"_blank\">make a convincing argument for its own implementation<\/a>. It&#8217;s also still in active development in the Year of Our Lord 2026, long after the gold rush ended\u2060, and that&#8217;s a commitment I admire. <\/p>\n<p>Frontier&#8217;s sell that always intrigued me is server-side modding at runtime. That is, you can create mods for yourself and other players without having to leave the game client. <\/p>\n<p>That freeform modding experiment, coupled with CCP&#8217;s manifest history with digital economies, has made me always want to stay up to date with the project.<\/p>\n<p>Frontier&#8217;s blockchain backend is, as I understand it, what lets its players so freely deploy modifications that other players immediately see, all without anyone logging off or leaving the client. <\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s unique in the MMO space, with most major players like FF14 or WoW alternating between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/mmo\/final-fantasy-14-and-world-of-warcraft-are-starting-to-meet-in-the-middle-on-modding-and-its-a-strange-new-world-for-mmos-and-their-addon-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\">benevolently ignoring<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/final-fantasy\/legal-inquiry-shuts-down-one-of-final-fantasy-14s-most-popular-mods-adding-yet-another-blurry-line-in-the-sand-from-square-enix\/\" target=\"_blank\">directly confronting<\/a> mod scenes that exist on a constellation of Discord servers and external websites. Rather than being opt-in, modding is an inextricable part of EVE Frontier, and I just think that&#8217;s neat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/mmo\/this-mmo-can-run-doom-eve-frontier-is-so-moddable-players-are-building-entire-games-within-its-space-survival-sandbox-and-the-devs-say-its-just-the-beginning\/\" target=\"_blank\">Last year&#8217;s Frontier hackathon<\/a> saw the winner create a 4X-style minigame within the space sim, where the worlds of a solar system would be assigned biomes and resources for players to manage and cultivate. Someone else, naturally, also got Doom running on a Smart Assembly, the in-game space station at the heart of Frontier&#8217;s modding and resource management.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s hackathon winners were:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5D7aHNFUe_s\" target=\"_blank\">CradleOS<\/a>: A bespoke UI and system to manage, coordinate, and govern resources and territory in-game, with an in-universe story about a mysterious AI attached.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sVwW5B2cqtY\" target=\"_blank\">Blood Contract<\/a>: A bounty system to functionally create PvP quests for other players.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nSctJ9gfZT4\" target=\"_blank\">Civilization Control<\/a>: A similar, but seemingly less far-reaching UI for managing territory and assets in Frontier, with a focus on usage permission for space structures like gates or autoturrets.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Two of the secondary category winners also caught my eye: The &#8220;Most Creative&#8221; winner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ewc7hQTkyko\" target=\"_blank\">Bazaar<\/a>, renders Frontier&#8217;s marketplace menu as a playable social space, a 2D, sprite-based, isometric environment resembling the OG Diablos or Baldur&#8217;s Gates.
