There are around a million on <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/app\/620\/workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\">the game&#8217;s Steam Workshop entry<\/a> alone\u2014and if you&#8217;ve ever tried modding it yourself and chafed at the game&#8217;s limitations, you&#8217;ll be pleased to learn about Portal 2: Community Edition, which released into open beta yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KWhOZ8G51E4\" target=\"_blank\">announcement video<\/a> is careful to clarify that this isn&#8217;t a remake or an overhaul of Portal 2&#8217;s core action or campaign, nor is it a campaign itself. Instead, it&#8217;s a &#8220;community-maintained&#8221; build which adds new lighting tech, volumetrics, support for more detailed textures, custom campaign support with built-in UI, expanded scripting capabilities, and an overhaul to the Hammer map editor. <\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-video\" data-nosnippet >\n<div class=\"video-aspect-box\"><iframe data-lazy-priority=\"low\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/KWhOZ8G51E4\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>These things are possible thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/stratasource.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Strata Source<\/a>, a fork of the CS:GO engine, which P2:CE is built on and was used to make mind-bending Portal 2 mods like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/a-fan-made-7-hour-portal-2-prequel-just-hit-steam-for-free-and-its-so-good-that-im-sad-valve-stopped-making-portal-all-over-again\/\">Portal: Revolution<\/a>. You can find a breakdown of the changes in the announcement video, as well as a showcase of what people have done with it so far. The <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/440000\/Portal_2_Community_Edition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steam page<\/a> casually shows a custom level which squeezes all of Portal 1 into a singlemap, so I&#8217;m curious to see what modders cook up now that CE is available to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>You can peruse the projects people have already made on <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/workshop\/browse\/?appid=440000&#038;browsesort=totaluniquesubscribers&#038;section=readytouseitems\" target=\"_blank\">the mod&#8217;s workshop page<\/a> (not Portal 2&#8217;s, mind you, but Community Edition&#8217;s). That includes <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/sharedfiles\/filedetails\/?id=3702489814&#038;searchtext=\" target=\"_blank\">Half-Life 2 maps<\/a> now accessible from the custom campaign menu, <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/sharedfiles\/filedetails\/?id=3594428478&#038;searchtext=\" target=\"_blank\">a gallery of assets<\/a> recreated with higher quality textures, and an original puzzle called <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/sharedfiles\/filedetails\/?id=3657857340&#038;searchtext=\" target=\"_blank\">Lesbian Kissing<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>There may not be a ton of new playable goodies to pick through just yet, but it sounds like the team behind CE are working on an original campaign to go with the mod itself.
