{"id":1556233,"date":"2026-04-18T16:04:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T16:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/YbzzAgUr3sRvPwdngZMVjP"},"modified":"2026-04-18T16:04:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T16:04:21","slug":"bafta-pulls-game-trailer-over-themes-that-may-be-a-trigger-even-after-developer-revision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcader.org\/news\/bafta-pulls-game-trailer-over-themes-that-may-be-a-trigger-even-after-developer-revision\/","title":{"rendered":"BAFTA pulls game trailer over &#8216;themes that may be a trigger&#8217; even after developer revision"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<p>Silver Script Games founder Alyx Jones had planned to roll out a trailer for her studio&#8217;s new game, The Quiet Things, at last night&#8217;s BAFTA awards\u2014but as Jones shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/alyxjones_baftagamesawards-indiegame-gamedev-activity-7450918293055590401-5tZ2\/?utm_source=share&#038;utm_medium=member_android&#038;rcm=ACoAACta0bkBRoYN-Z13nFEaa9S1xFXXmJle6l8\" target=\"_blank\">in a LinkedIn post<\/a> yesterday, she received a phone call the night before telling her the trailer had been pulled due to sensitive content. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was meant to be shown during the awards show and reveal our release date,&#8221; Jones posted. &#8220;For the last two weeks I\u2019d been working hard to cut this trailer together while already badly burned out, because I believed this was the biggest opportunity we were ever likely to get.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#8217;t the first time concerns had been raised about the trailer, which introduces the game&#8217;s themes of childhood trauma, but Jones said she believed the issue was resolved to BAFTA&#8217;s satisfaction. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To have that pulled from under our feet the night before the show was devastating, especially after revising the trailer to remove imagery BAFTA flagged as potentially reading as &#8216;weapons and violence&#8217; (an object inspection of a craft knife and a statue breaking out of a mirror), and being thanked for my speed and the quality of the trailer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She continued that she offered to revise the trailer even further, but &#8220;was ignored,&#8221; with BAFTA allegedly maintaining that &#8220;there wasn\u2019t enough time to put the appropriate warnings in place for the audience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/bafta-game-awards-quiet-things-trailer-silver-script-2000688583\" target=\"_blank\">to Kotaku<\/a>, BAFTA responded to Jones&#8217; post. &#8220;We made a compliance decision not to show a trailer of an unreleased game that contains themes that may be a trigger for some, in consideration of our guests as we were not in a position to sufficiently warn them,&#8221; the organization said. &#8220;We fully support games that engage with difficult subjects, and we made the decision in relation to our event only and with the wellbeing of all guests as our priority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You can check out <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vMzCEBxTPgE\" target=\"_blank\">the new trailer on YouTube<\/a>, and while it clearly evokes themes of abuse and trauma (mostly through dialogue and nonviolent, abstract visuals), it&#8217;s certainly less shocking than, I don&#8217;t know, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/rpg\/divinitys-trailer-is-cool-but-i-suspect-larians-body-horror-burning-man-splatfest-doesnt-set-an-accurate-tone-for-the-full-game-and-if-im-right-itll-be-weird-that-its-happened-twice\/\">any Larian trailer<\/a> in recent memory. It&#8217;s hard not to think of Horses, a game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/horror\/epic-bans-indie-horror-game-horses-just-one-day-before-launch-due-to-inappropriate-content-despite-having-approved-that-content-weeks-ago\/\">banned from multiple major digital storefronts<\/a> for visuals and themes that, while perhaps uncommon in the videogame space, seem no more shocking than what you&#8217;d see in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/horror\/theres-more-to-horses-than-the-steam-ban-the-controversial-horror-game-is-a-great-example-of-how-games-can-effectively-borrow-from-film-and-how-they-can-also-stumble\/\">a mildly transgressive horror flick<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Art should make people feel something,&#8221; Jones continued in her post. &#8220;The Quiet Things is deeply personal to me. It\u2019s my story. It\u2019s about trauma, abuse, survival, and giving survivors a voice. It\u2019s about people being shut down and silenced, and what that does to them.
