Permadeath-only? That one expansion with all the alcohol-dependent pandas? But private servers like the popular Turtle WoW are still the only place players can find the WoW equivalent to Old School RuneScape: the classic game, but with new stuff.<\/p>\n<p>That said, while some private servers for other games have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/mmo\/with-a-near-unprecedented-official-license-for-its-fan-server-one-of-pc-gamings-great-mmos-has-a-vibrant-future-let-it-be-shouted-far-and-wide-city-of-heroes-lives-again\/\">gotten the go-ahead<\/a> from the right people, Blizzard hasn&#8217;t been gentle with these sorts of projects in the past. Before World of Warcraft&#8217;s official classic realms serving up the vanilla version of the game, there was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/inside-the-server-blizzard-wants-to-shut-down\/\">the private server Nostalrius<\/a>, which got into legal trouble before long. Now there is Turtle WoW, which got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/world-of-warcraft\/blizzard-filed-a-copyright-infringement-lawsuit-against-one-of-world-of-warcrafts-biggest-private-servers-but-the-team-behind-it-is-putting-on-a-brave-face-challenges-come-to-us-often-and-each-time-we-are-prepared-to-face-them\/\">hit with a lawsuit<\/a> last September\u2014and on Friday, a US district court judge ruled in Blizzard&#8217;s favor.<\/p>\n<p>You can find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/71235075\/56\/1\/blizzard-entertainment-inc-v-turtle-wow\/\" target=\"_blank\">the court docs<\/a> online, and they detail an order to cease and desist. Basically, the devs have been ordered to stop &#8220;developing, programming, coding, operating, updating, supporting, maintaining,&#8221; et cetera, the server. Notably, it also prohibits the developers from passing along their code to facilitate a &#8220;&#8216;successor.'&#8221; That might seem cheeky, but these servers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/private-world-of-warcraft-servers-arent-backing-down-in-the-face-of-wow-classic\/\">rarely just lay down and die<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/71235075\/58\/blizzard-entertainment-inc-v-turtle-wow\/\" target=\"_blank\">Another document<\/a> states that Blizzard and the defendants have reached a settlement which &#8220;is expected to result in a resolution of the action in its entirety,&#8221; though the specifics are not shared. &#8220;The terms of the parties\u2019 settlement agreements are confidential,&#8221; the document reads. &#8220;However, the settlement is conditioned upon certain actions that are required to be taken by certain parties and non-parties over the next several weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the lawsuit was filed in 2025, the Turtle WoW team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/world-of-warcraft\/with-a-lawsuit-looming-world-of-warcraft-private-server-turtle-wow-has-issued-a-formal-plea-for-a-fan-server-licensing-we-hope-that-blizzard-embraces-fan-driven-content-as-its-own-legacy-rather-than-alienate-this-passionate-community\/\">asked Blizzard<\/a> for a fan server licensing framework.
