Digital Extremes has just joined the chorus of anti-AI game developers, with community director Megan Everett telling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/nothing-in-our-games-will-be-ai-generated-ever-says-warframe-director\/1100-6539194\/\" target=\"_blank\">GameSpot<\/a> she&#8217;s &#8220;very passionate about not having any of that shit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are a very non-AI company and it is all humans making Warframe and Soulframe,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I literally don&#8217;t even want to open any type of timeline and look at art because I&#8217;m like, &#8216;Am I being fooled?&#8217; I literally don&#8217;t know if what I&#8217;m looking at is real, and I get so frustrated about it, it&#8217;s so annoying \u2026 Nothing in our games will be AI-generated. Ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the same conversation, Everett mentioned a recent community stream where someone submitted some AI-generated fan art of a Warframe-inspired Gundam. &#8220;I thought it was so cool, and so I showed it,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Immediately, everyone watching the stream clocked it, and I was devastated. It was so damn sneaky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/google-ceos-warning-about-the-ai-bubble-bursting-no-company-is-going-to-be-immune-including-us\/\">AI bubble is threatening to burst<\/a> in wake of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/memory\/ram-and-storage-is-ridiculously-expensive-right-now-because-of-drumroll-ai-of-course-and-theres-little-reason-to-think-prices-will-drop-any-time-soon\/\">RAMpocalypse<\/a> and developers are growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/more-than-half-of-game-developers-now-think-generative-ai-is-bad-for-the-industry-a-dramatic-increase-from-just-2-years-ago-id-rather-quit-the-industry-than-use-generative-ai\/\">increasingly skeptical of the technology<\/a>, recent estimates still reckon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/87-percent-of-game-developers-are-already-using-ai-agents-and-over-a-third-use-ai-for-creative-elements-like-level-design-and-dialogue-according-to-a-new-google-survey\/\">generative AI is ubiquitous in gamedev<\/a>. Arc Raiders, which was a huge success despite prominent and extensive use of AI voice acting, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/third-person-shooter\/embark-ceo-says-a-real-professional-actor-is-better-than-ai-after-the-studio-re-records-some-arc-raiders-dialog-with-real-humans\/\">phasing out generated assets for handmade ones<\/a>\u2014but its publisher Nexon recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/third-person-shooter\/arc-raiders-is-a-trojan-horse-for-demonstrating-ai-tool-usage-in-game-development-according-to-nexon-after-embark-built-two-hits-at-a-fraction-of-the-cost-youd-expect\/\">praised the game<\/a> for proving AI is a handy money-saver.<\/p>\n<p>Even with big studios like Digital Extremes drawing a line in the sand, it&#8217;s hard to put a cat back in the bag. While a recent survey found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/major-industry-survey-finds-that-surprise-surprise-9-10-game-devs-think-generative-ai-use-should-be-more-fully-disclosed-on-steam\/\">9\/10 devs want more detailed and consistent AI disclosures on Steam<\/a>, there&#8217;s been a lot of asking forgiveness rather than permission with games like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/rpg\/crimson-desert-team-apologizes-after-players-find-ai-art-in-the-game-our-intention-has-always-been-for-any-such-assets-to-be-replaced\/\">Crimson Desert<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/city-builder\/ubisoft-touches-up-ai-art-placeholder-that-slipped-into-anno-117-but-fans-are-not-happy-it-was-there-to-begin-with-of-all-the-video-games-not-anno\/\">Anno 117<\/a>, both of which had AI &#8220;placeholders&#8221; quietly slip into the final game. <\/p>\n<p>The waters being so murky has even pushed developers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/sim\/understandable-ai-paranoia-has-inspired-a-developer-to-change-the-handcrafted-character-art-in-its-upcoming-sim-they-look-a-bit-ai\/\">change handcrafted art just because it <em>resembled<\/em> generative AI<\/a>\u2014slop-induced paranoia is sure to have an impact on any given developer, whether they use the tech or not.
