Last week, a New Mexico jury decided against the company in a lawsuit brought by state prosecutors after <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/meta-facebook-trial-new-mexico-social-trial-facebook-instagram-whatsapp-d8b812efd001e5cabbef9e1a47143226\" target=\"_blank\">an undercover investigation<\/a> by the state.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/meta-facebook-new-mexico-trial-28eabd8ec5f58c1d1ecddc21bb107de7\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a>, the trial went on for seven weeks, with prosecutors arguing that sites like Instagram and Facebook &#8220;prioritized profits over safety, and violated parts of the state\u2019s Unfair Practices Act,&#8221; with Meta failing to protect children from sexual exploitation. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The jury\u2019s verdict is a historic victory for every child and family who has paid the price for Meta\u2019s choice to put profits over kids\u2019 safety,&#8221; said New Mexico attorney general Ra\u00fal Torrez in <a href=\"https:\/\/nmdoj.gov\/press-release\/new-mexico-department-of-justice-wins-landmark-verdict-against-meta\/\" target=\"_blank\">a press release<\/a> from the state&#8217;s Department of Justice. &#8220;Meta executives knew their products harmed children, disregarded warnings from their own employees, and lied to the public about what they knew.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The stinger is that Meta&#8217;s being slapped with the &#8220;maximum penalty under the law of $5,000 per violation,&#8221; which comes to a grand total of $375 million in penalties. Considering that Meta reported <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.atmeta.com\/investor-news\/press-release-details\/2026\/Meta-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-2025-Results\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">over $200 billion<\/a> in annual revenue last year, it&#8217;s not going to upend the tech world overnight, but it is definitionally not nothing. The AP noted that the penalty is &#8220;less than one-fifth of what prosecutors were seeking&#8221; and that Meta&#8217;s stock was up 5% in the hours after the news came out.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, the trial does have a next phase beginning in May. &#8220;We will seek additional financial penalties and court-mandated changes to Meta\u2019s platforms,&#8221; said Torrez.
