{"id":1475715,"date":"2026-01-26T14:16:44","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T14:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ak4BeBj86YgjDgduZT2b4"},"modified":"2026-01-26T14:16:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T14:16:44","slug":"microsoft-reports-an-issue-in-which-devices-are-failing-to-boot-after-downloading-the-latest-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcader.org\/news\/microsoft-reports-an-issue-in-which-devices-are-failing-to-boot-after-downloading-the-latest-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft reports &#8216;an issue in which devices are failing to boot&#8217; after downloading the latest update"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<p>If you have downloaded January&#8217;s KB5074109 Windows update and can&#8217;t seem to get past boot, you aren&#8217;t alone.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2026\/01\/25\/microsoft-suspects-some-pcs-might-not-boot-after-windows-11-january-2026-update-kb5074109\/\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Latest<\/a>, Microsoft has updated users in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/admin.cloud.microsoft\/Adminportal\/Home?source=applauncher#\/windowsreleasehealth\/:\/issue\/WI1221934\" target=\"_blank\">support document <\/a>that it is &#8220;investigating customer reports of device boot failures following the January 2026 update and later updates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The document is only accessible by Microsoft 365 business accounts, which does seem to imply that it&#8217;s business devices that are typically affected by this boot problem. However, so far, there&#8217;s been no confirmation either way on which devices are affected.<\/p>\n<p>The document says, &#8220;Microsoft has received a limited number of reports of an issue in which devices are failing to boot with stop\u202fcode &#8216;UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME&#8217;, after installing the January 2026 Windows security update (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5074109\" target=\"_blank\">KB5074109<\/a>), released January 13, 2026, and later updates. Affected devices show a black screen with the message &#8216;Your device ran into a problem and needs a restart. You can restart.&#8217; At this stage, the device cannot complete startup and requires manual recovery steps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Typically, this error code tends to signify a problem with a boot drive (but can also happen due to corrupted files or even an issue with memory). However, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Dell\/comments\/12uf7fs\/comment\/jh6xxpf\/?utm_source=share&#038;utm_medium=web3x&#038;utm_name=web3xcss&#038;utm_term=1&#038;utm_content=share_button\" target=\"_blank\">this isn&#8217;t the first time<\/a> users have reported a Windows update being responsible for this error code.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/forums\/topic\/reports-of-boot-failures-with-the-january-2026-security-update-and-later-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:1920px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"7L45qJURHrfPzBPEXXbdUn\" name=\"C (7)\" alt=\"Thanks to Susan Bradley on the AskWoody forum for this screenshot\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/microsoft-reports-an-issue-in-which-devices-are-failing-to-boot-after-downloading-the-latest-update.jpg\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"inline\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Susan Bradley on Askwoody \/ Microsoft)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is not the only problem that has popped up in this month&#8217;s updates. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/status-windows-11-24h2#2738msgdesc\" target=\"_blank\">January 24 saw the launch of a surprise update<\/a>, which patched an issue with apps becoming unresponsive when saving files on the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has only indicated a &#8216;limited&#8217; number of reports, so we don&#8217;t yet know how widespread this problem is. Microsoft does clarify that it is only currently happening to physical devices and hasn&#8217;t been spotted on virtual machines. The issue is being investigated and seems to only impact those with the 26200.7623 and 26100.7623 Windows builds, or later.<\/p>\n<p>You can check if your PC could be affected by going to &#8216;Settings&#8217;, then &#8216;About&#8217; and scrolling down to &#8216;Windows info&#8217;. The &#8216;OS build&#8217; section should tell you which build you&#8217;re on. Naturally, if you aren&#8217;t yet on the KB5074109 Windows update, I&#8217;d advise holding off until Microsoft can diagnose the problem.<\/p>\n<p>If, however, you have the update and have found yourself affected, you will have to use the Windows Recovery option or, worst-case scenario, go through a clean reinstall. The only thing worse than using Windows is <em>installing <\/em>Windows, but for casual users, there aren&#8217;t many OSes to choose from.
