But while Bungie&#8217;s been hard at work overhauling Marathon&#8217;s gameplay, it&#8217;s also undergone a change in leadership: Just three months before its March 2026 launch, Marathon art director Joseph Cross has chosen to leave the studio.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thegamepost.com\/bungie-joseph-cross-stepped-down-marathon-franchise-art-director\/\">The Game Post<\/a> spotted the first indications that Cross had left Bungie, reporting that Cross&#8217;s LinkedIn profile now listed a 2025 end date for his position as Bungie senior art director. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/josephacross\">Cross&#8217;s X account<\/a> biography had also been updated, removing a previous mention of the studio. Cross has since <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/marathon-art-director-joseph-cross-leaves-bungie-2000654665\">confirmed to Kotaku<\/a> that he is no longer employed by Bungie, and that it was his decision to leave the studio.<\/p>\n<div class=\"see-more see-more--clipped\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet hawk-ignore\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#8217;m incredibly proud of the visual world we built for Marathon. Massive thank you to everyone who has supported through all of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Prior to his role as Marathon art director, Cross had spent more than six years at Bungie as a lead concept artist contributing to the development of Destiny&#8217;s visual language. On his <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artstation.com\/josephacross\">ArtStation account<\/a>, you can trace a visible throughline of vibrant, geometric iconography in Cross&#8217;s Destiny work that bleeds through into Marathon&#8217;s cyberpunk acid design.<\/p>\n<p>It was during Cross&#8217;s tenure as Marathon art lead that Bungie was forced to acknowledge <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/artist-accuses-bungie-of-stealing-her-designs-for-marathons-art-i-am-tired-of-designers-from-huge-companies-moodboarding-and-parasitising-my-designs-while-i-struggle-to-make-a-living\/\">its fourth art theft scandal<\/a> since 2021, after visual artist Antireal accused the studio of using her designs without credit or permission in Marathon environmental art. In a statement confirming the &#8220;oversight,&#8221; Bungie said &#8220;a former Bungie artist&#8221; had included the &#8220;unauthorized&#8221; designs in Marathon&#8217;s texture sheets without the current art team&#8217;s knowledge.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:1929px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:51.32%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"UWwQuFvri3nNeFyeEd8K5R\" name=\"Marathon\" alt=\"Image from Bungie's Marathon reboot. But after Marathon&#8217;s delay, the reaction to its reworked direction has been generally positive.
