Despite making over 100,000 sales and earning spots on more than 130,000 Steam users&#8217; wishlists in over 10 years of early access, indie developer Permadeath watched as Planet Centauri&#8217;s full release day came\u2014and the world barely noticed (via <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/valve-steam-alpha-centauri-launch-bug-daily-deal-terraria\/\" target=\"_blank\">Polygon<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We sold\u2026 581 units in 5 days,&#8221; Permadeath developer Laurent Lechat wrote in<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gamedev\/comments\/1nfd2ji\/this_is_how_steam_can_ruin_more_than_10_years_of\/\" target=\"_blank\"> a Reddit post<\/a> last week. &#8220;The game didn&#8217;t even appear on page 2; we were invisible; we were a total flop. And we never understood why until today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After nine months of confusion and frustration, Permadeath finally received an explanation from Valve itself: When Planet Centauri finally launched, nobody who&#8217;d wishlisted it knew\u2014because Steam never told them.<\/p>\n<p>In an email to Permadeath, Valve said that Planet Centauri&#8217;s 1.0 launch suffered from &#8220;a bug that impacted a very small number of game releases (less than 100 since 2015) where wishlist email notifications for the launch of a game were not sent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s unlikely that all of Planet Centauri&#8217;s 130,000 wishlists would&#8217;ve translated into sales, Steam&#8217;s failure to deliver those launch day notifications meant that Planet Centauri didn&#8217;t receive crucial momentum when it would&#8217;ve mattered most to Valve&#8217;s infamously competitive discovery algorithm.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:960px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"dBLxkEmpRjouZxV4B3i2Ab\" name=\"ss_34edc7861a27f0d8480acfdcca9335b0857d0089\" alt=\"A player character faces a large serpent enemy in a lava cave in Planet Centauri.\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/9-months-after-its-1-0-launch-flopped-an-indie-dev-just-learned-that-steam-never-emailed-the-130000-people-who-wishlisted-its-game.jpg\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Permadeath)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Steam&#8217;s curation algorithms are a black box, but a burst of day one sales might&#8217;ve placed Planet Centauri\u2014whose <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hBf5mZFUbpU\" target=\"_blank\">1.0 trailer<\/a> has been watched almost 500,000 times on YouTube\u2014in Steam&#8217;s New &#038; Tending listings.
