Despite writing an article about the reaction to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/even-with-a-9800x3d-and-a-5090-it-runs-like-absolute-buttcheeks-2k-games-posts-nvidias-borderlands-4-optimised-settings-guide-but-the-community-is-already-in-open-revolt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nvidia&#8217;s brutal optimised settings charts<\/a> for Borderlands 4, and being well aware of stuttering issues thanks to Nick&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/ive-tested-borderlands-4-on-a-minimum-spec-pc-and-a-monster-rtx-5090-rig-and-it-runs-just-as-borderlands-at-launch-as-youd-expect\/\" target=\"_blank\">performance testing<\/a> piece, I jumped into the game this weekend anyway. And, lo and behold, the stuttering was very much there\u2014until I discovered a fix that&#8217;s virtually eliminated the issue on my machine.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not my own discovery, in fact, but that of YouTuber <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/S5_CzXrkP9E?feature=shared&#038;t=490\" target=\"_blank\">Ki11er Six<\/a>, who posted a review of the game along with a crucial performance tip a few days ago. Then, simply right-click on your desktop, hit &#8220;Show more options&#8221; (depending on how you&#8217;ve got your Windows context menus set up), open the Nvidia Control Panel, and navigate in the side panel to &#8220;Manage 3D settings.&#8221; From there, scroll down in the Global Settings tab to Shader Cache Size, use the drop-down menu to select 100 GB, and hit Apply.<\/p>\n<p>Adjusting this setting has caused a night-and-day change on my particular rig. While stutters haven&#8217;t been eliminated completely, over the past 12-13 hours I&#8217;ve encountered precisely two of the little blighters\u2014both of which have been micro-hitches rather than immersion-ruining crunches, as was common previously.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/microsofts-directx-advanced-shader-delivery-tech-might-be-the-eventual-answer-to-stuttering-and-shader-compilation-woes-but-its-limited-to-the-rog-ally-x-for-now\/\" target=\"_blank\">shader compilation stutter<\/a> will usually improve as more time is spent in the game, so I also changed the setting back at a later point and flushed my shader cache to see if I could get it to return. Yep, it&#8217;s there alright\u2014and once again solved by upping the shader cache size and rebooting the game.<\/p>\n<p>Restarting the game by itself (or playing onwards to allow more time for the shaders to be built) doesn&#8217;t have the same effect, so I&#8217;m pretty sure it&#8217;s the size of the cache allowed here that makes the difference. So, I&#8217;ll be reverting it back to the driver default as soon as my playthrough is over.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also worth mentioning that this method isn&#8217;t going to help you boost your frame rate overall, but I do have a tip that might help in that regard as well. Volumetric Fog and Volumetric Clouds appear to be two of the most demanding graphics options, and dropping them down by a step or two has taken a significant amount of load off of my test card, the venerable <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/nvidia-rtx-5070-ti-review-msi-ventus-3x\/\" target=\"_blank\">RTX 5070 Ti<\/a>. The visual difference is absolutely minimal, as best as my ageing eyes can tell, but the frame rate seems to be much more stable with both of them reigned in.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean I&#8217;ve been able to turn down the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/nvidia-announces-dlss-4-with-multi-frame-generation-says-it-can-help-multiply-frame-rates-by-up-to-8x-over-traditional-brute-force-rendering\/\" target=\"_blank\">Multi Frame Generation<\/a> and DLSS help much, though. At 4K on a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/amd-ryzen-7-7700x-review-benchmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ryzen 7 7700X<\/a> machine with everything else at Badass settings, I&#8217;ve been able to keep the game well above 100 fps during open world gameplay with the help of 3x MFG and DLSS 4 set to Balanced\u2014which means in reality, the hardware is still struggling pretty hard underneath.<\/p>\n<p>If anything, it&#8217;s been a demonstration to me of how well MFG can work when the base frame rate is far from ideal, although I&#8217;ve shied away from sticking it to the top 4x setting to avoid latency issues. The game feels surprisingly responsive at 3x, but it&#8217;s going to vary from person to person as to whether you can perceive much of a difference between 3x and regular 2x FG, or Native.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:3840px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"SKu5ocwot85FhZeMVZe8vU\" name=\"Borderlands 4 Screenshot 2025.09.14 - 14.44.15.98\" alt=\"Claptrap quite literally pushing the boat out in Borderlands 4\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/i-fixed-borderlands-4s-stuttering-issue-by-upping-my-shader-cache-size-to-100-gb-which-feels-like-something-i-shouldnt-have-to-do-in-a-well-optimised-game-1.png\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"\" width=\"3840\" height=\"2160\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Gearbox)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And despite having a pretty good time with Borderlands 4 over the weekend, I still wouldn&#8217;t say this is acceptable performance, given the taxing nature of the game on very powerful hardware. By the looks of these results, I&#8217;d say Borderlands 4&#8217;s asset streaming and shader caching system could do with a lot of work\u2014and it seems to be far from the only area that could do with a tweak.<\/p>\n<p>Even the fastest consumer GPU you can currently buy, the $2,000+ <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/nvidia-geforce-rtx-5090-fe-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">RTX 5090<\/a>, can struggle to maintain 60 fps at 4K Native\u2014and I can&#8217;t help but feel that there are some serious optimisation issues clanking around underneath the hood here, despite Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford&#8217;s protestations that BL4 is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/borderlands-4-is-a-premium-game-made-for-premium-gamers-is-randy-pitchfords-tone-deaf-retort-to-the-performance-backlash-if-youre-trying-to-drive-a-monster-truck-with-a-leaf-blowers-motor-youre-going-to-be-disappointed\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;a premium game made for premium players.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Premium or not, I&#8217;d say it still needs some substantial optimisation to bring gamers with lesser hardware into the fold. After all, not all of us are lucky enough to have a wealth of high-end components at our disposal, and Borderlands 4 is a game you&#8217;re supposed to be able to play with your friends.
