After much deliberation and argumentation, Nvidia was finally cleared from US scrutiny to import its H20 chips into China recently, and this came with concerns from China.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-31\/china-summons-nvidia-representatives-over-h20-chip-security-risk\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a>, Nvidia was summoned by &#8220;Beijing authorities&#8221; over suspected security risks with its H20 chips. Nvidia is said to have been asked to explain potential risks by the Cyberspace Administration of China, and whether or not Nvidia&#8217;s chip had a backdoor, which could be accessed and logged remotely without the consent of owners.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Nvidia states, &#8220;Nvidia does not have \u2018backdoors\u2019 in our chips that would give anyone a remote way to access or control them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The H20 is a chip designed to specifically comply with export restrictions placed on technology going to China. Effectively, the US wants to win the AI race and sees restricting China&#8217;s access to the best AI GPUs as part of this plan.<\/p>\n<p>In <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/nvidia-could-lose-usd5-5-billion-to-charges-after-new-indefinite-restriction-on-exports-of-beefy-ai-gpus-to-china\/\" target=\"_blank\">April<\/a>, it was announced that Nvidia would need a specific license to ship the H20 chips, and even this was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/nvidias-hopper-gpus-are-now-dead-to-the-chinese-market-after-export-controls-that-made-the-company-take-a-multibillion-dollar-write-off\/\" target=\"_blank\">halted in a ban in May<\/a>. By the middle of July, the US government had once again <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/as-if-being-worth-usd4-trillion-isnt-enough-nvidia-claims-the-us-government-says-it-can-start-selling-ai-gpus-to-china-again\/\" target=\"_blank\">allowed the sale of the H20 chips<\/a>. In May, a US politician argued to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/one-us-politician-wants-to-add-trackers-to-nvidias-graphics-cards-so-they-can-be-bricked-if-they-end-up-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\">add trackers to all Nvidia GPUs<\/a> so they can be bricked if they end up in China. Just <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/graphics-cards\/us-senator-announces-a-bill-requiring-geotracking-in-high-end-gpus-to-prevent-the-chinese-government-from-wielding-the-ruinous-power-of-your-nvidia-rtx-4090\/\" target=\"_blank\">days after this<\/a>, a senator announced a bill pushing for the same outcome.<\/p>\n<p>A statement from the CAC says, \u201cUS lawmakers have previously called for advanced chips exported from the US to be equipped with location-tracking features.&#8221; It goes on, \u201cthe location-tracking and remote shutdown capabilities on Nvidia computing chips are ready, according to US AI experts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/ai\/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-says-we-dont-have-to-worry-about-the-chinese-military-using-us-chips-to-improve-their-capabilities-because-they-simply-cant-rely-on-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">last month<\/a>, Jensen Huang said, &#8220;Depriving someone of technology is not a goal, it&#8217;s a tactic. And that tactic was not in service of the goal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He continues, &#8220;Our mission, properly expressed&#8230; in order for America to have AI leadership\u2026is to make sure the American tech stack is available to markets all over the world, so that amazing developers, including the ones in China, are able to build on [the] American tech stack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The back door and tracking concerns from both sides don&#8217;t seem to be done here, but Nvidia has gone some way to ease tensions.
