{"id":1268984,"date":"2026-03-09T16:43:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T16:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/617646\/gigantamax-lapras-counters-weakness-and-battle-tips-in-pokemon-go"},"modified":"2026-03-09T16:43:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T16:43:27","slug":"gigantamax-butterfree-counters-weakness-and-battle-tips-in-pokemon-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcader.org\/news\/gigantamax-butterfree-counters-weakness-and-battle-tips-in-pokemon-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Gigantamax Butterfree counters, weakness, and battle tips in Pok\u00e9mon Go"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/gigantamax-butterfree-counters-weakness-and-battle-tips-in-pokemon-go.png\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Gigantamax Butterfree<\/strong> is the latest addition to the list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/pokemon-go-guide\/467353\/gigantamax-pokemon-get-catch\">Gigantamax Pok\u00e9mon<\/a> introduced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/game\/pokemon-go\/38713\"><em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em><\/a>, and is available in Max Battles as part of the Gigantamax Butterfree Max Battle Day on Aug. 3 from 2-5 p.m. in your local time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">This big bug will only have niche uses (as is the way for bug-type Pok\u00e9mon), but if you like to collect Gigantamax Pok\u00e9mon, you\u2019ll want one for your collection regardless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Below, we list out some general Gigantamax Max Battle tips and counters for Gigantamax Butterfree in <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\" id=\"gigantamax-butterfree-weakness\">Gigantamax Butterfree weakness<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Gigantamax Butterfree has a ton of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/pokemon-go-guide\/22554033\/type-chart-strengths-weaknesses-super-effective\">weaknesses<\/a><\/strong>: <strong>flying-, rock-, fire-, electric, and ice-type moves.<\/strong> On top of that, Butterfree actually has doubled weakness against rock-type moves, though we won\u2019t be able to make much use of that yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">You\u2019ll want to avoid using ground-, fighting-, bug-, and grass-type moves, as Butterfree has a resistance against those types.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\" id=\"gigantamax-butterfree-best-counters\">Gigantamax Butterfree best counters<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">With the above in mind, there\u2019s a good number of counters to bring to Butterfree. We recommend the following to focus on <strong>offensive <\/strong>moves:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gigantamax Cinderace <\/strong>with Tackle (G-Max Fireball)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gigantamax Toxtricity<\/strong> with Spark (G-Max Stun Shock)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gigantamax Charizard <\/strong>with Dragon Breath (G-Max Wildfire)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamax Darmanitan<\/strong> with Fire Fang (Max Flare)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>You can also bring the Dynamax versions of the above Pok\u00e9mon<\/strong> (though, yes, they will deal less damage than their Gigantamax counterparts). If you\u2019re running D-Max versions of the above, Cinderace and Charizard will both want Fire Spin instead as their fast moves. Since D-Max moves pull typing from the fast move, it\u2019ll want this over the listed attacks, which we only recommend on the G-Max versions because they\u2019re faster and thus builds up the gauge more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">As a reminder, there is a set of Timed Research that will give you an encounter with a <strong>Dynamax Darumaka<\/strong>, Darumaka Candy, and some particles ahead of the weekend. It\u2019s actually a pretty decent option if you don\u2019t have Toxtricity, Cinderace, or Charizard, so don\u2019t sleep on this Timed Research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">If you want to be an ally to your team, you can bring the following Pok\u00e9mon with Max Guard and\/or Max Spirit to help out <strong>defensively<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Crowned Shield Zamazenta<\/strong> with Metal Claw<\/li>\n<li><strong>Crowned Sword Zacian <\/strong>with Metal Claw<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamax Corviknight<\/strong> with Sand Attack<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamax Blissey<\/strong> with Pound<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">These moves will allow you to build up shields quickly, and their bulk will let them last long against Butterfree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Even if you don\u2019t have these powered up, consider just bringing the <em>strongest<\/em> Dynamax Pok\u00e9mon you have. If you have a maxed out Dynamax Gengar and your Dynamax Charizard isn\u2019t leveled (and you don\u2019t have the means to power it up), just bring your Gengar.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\" id=\"general-gigantamax-butterfree-tips\">General Gigantamax Butterfree tips<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">If you\u2019ve been struggling in Max Battles, here\u2019s some general tips to survive \u2014 and make sure you\u2019re an asset to your team. Gigantamax battles involve way more strategy than the usual rampant tapping that you do in raids, so make sure to know what you\u2019re doing before jumping in.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make sure you have enough players.<\/strong> High-efficiency groups with maxed out investments can take down the Butterfree with fewer people, but practically, if you don\u2019t have hundreds of spare candy and even more Stardust laying around, this isn\u2019t going to be an option for you. Make sure you have as many people as possible to ensure that you get your musically inclined cruise ship-shell creature.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t sleep on Max Spirit and Max Guard<\/strong>. Teams work best when there\u2019s a variety of moves, not just maxed-out attacks. Each player should bring Pok\u00e9mon with the defensive and healing moves unlocked as well. Max Guard will focus single-target damage towards you and reduce the damage taken and Max Spirit will heal the whole party, so these moves are really important to make sure your damage-dealers can keep dishing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember to swap to super effective moves when it\u2019s time to Dynamax<\/strong>. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/pokemon-go-guide\/449273\/dynamax-pokemon-get-catch-max-battles\">Dynamax Pok\u00e9mon<\/a>, their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/pokemon-go-guide\/538805\/max-move-unlock-level-how-to\">max moves<\/a> will be whatever type their fast move is. This means if you have a Rillaboom with Razor Leaf, it will know Max Overgrowth. A Gengar with Shadow Claw will know Max Phantasm. Take advantage of this and make sure to swap to a Pok\u00e9mon that will deal super effective damage to your target before Dynamaxing, if you can.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level up a few \u2018mons, but you don\u2019t have to go too hard<\/strong>. Depending on your group size, you absolutely do not need to max out all your Dynamax Pok\u00e9mon to level 40-50. While this will make it easier on the rest of your group, if this isn\u2019t an investment you can make, you don\u2019t have to stress about it. Power things up as high as you can afford to, but don\u2019t fret if you don\u2019t have a maxed out Pok\u00e9mon.<\/li>\n<li>That all being said, <strong>make sure to come as prepared as you can be<\/strong>. This is a team effort and there\u2019s a reason why groups of 30-40 people can still fail. Do not just bring your unleveled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/pokemon-go-guide\/447546\/to-the-max-special-research-quest-rewards\">Dynamax Wooloo<\/a> expecting a free ride to a powerful Pok\u00e9mon. After all, if <em>everyone<\/em> does that, then you certainly won\u2019t clear the battle. Again, you don\u2019t have to completely max out your Pok\u00e9mon, but it will be better for everyone involved if you bring something helpful to the table.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep your eye out for a shiny Butterfree!<\/strong> If you clear the raid, there is a chance that the Butterfree you catch will be shiny \u2014 which also means it\u2019ll be a guaranteed catch.
