People have cheered and booed in equal measure for the casting of Pedro Pascal as Joel in <em>The Last of Us<\/em>, or Robert Pattinson as Batman. Some performers have won stubborn fans over. When Heath Ledger was cast as The Joker, nobody wanted a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thedissolve.com\/features\/exposition\/781-its-time-to-stop-freaking-out-about-movies-we-have\/\">gay cowboy<\/a>\u201d in the role. Dissenters ate those words.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But nothing has mystified me quite as much as some of the reactions I\u2019ve seen to the casting of 21-year-old Bo Bragason as Zelda and 16-year-old Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/news\/613329\/zelda-movie-link-cast\">the upcoming live-action Zelda movie<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Because a lot of people think they\u2019re going to kiss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Across social media, fans are expressing concern about the age gap between the two, saying it will be hard to forget in the theater, and that it\u2019s weird to cast a \u201clove interest\u201d so much older than the main character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Well, sure, it would be! If Zelda were Link\u2019s love interest.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\"><strong>Zelda and Link have an eternal connection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Nothing has been revealed about the plot of the live-action Zelda movie but if anything, this casting indicates to me that Link and Zelda will <em>not<\/em> be romantically involved in the film. This wouldn\u2019t be abnormal for any entry in the Zelda franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It\u2019s a narrative choice that would echo not one, but <em>most<\/em> of the Legend of Zelda games. Link and Zelda have never been canonically and immutably a couple. They\u2019re barely immutably <em>themselves<\/em>. Sometimes Zelda is a pirate or a ninja. Sometimes Link is 17. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/zelda\/23692483\/legend-of-zelda-link-wind-waker-ocarina-of-time-majoras-mask\">In other games<\/a> he\u2019s four 12-year-olds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Link and Zelda\u2019s strongest romantic connection is probably in <em>The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword<\/em>, where they make gooey eyes at each other. Zelda\u2019s song is even called \u201cRomance Theme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The pair have kissed, in two games. At the end of 1987\u2019s <em>The Legend of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link<\/em>, a curtain falls and the two share a smooch. In <em>Oracle of Ages <\/em>and <em>Oracle of Seasons<\/em>. Zelda gives Link a thank-you peck, and he gets all dopey and dizzy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Neither moment feels particularly couple-y. The <em>Adventure of Link<\/em> kiss comes across as a \u201creward\u201d typical of games of that era. The <em>Oracle<\/em> kiss is similarly goofy, and plays as a joke. There is no heat or romance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/fans-need-to-understand-link-and-zelda-arent-a-couple-1.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In other popular games like <em>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess<\/em>, Link and Zelda save Hyrule once more, and Link leaves to pursue his own mysterious destiny, while Zelda rebuilds Hyrule Castle. They\u2019re all business!<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">If anything, in most games their relationship ranges from platonic to ambiguous. A lot of people ship them. I get it. Their bond literally crosses space, time, and multiple realms. Link and Zelda will always find each other to save their world. That\u2019s potent, baby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But Zelda\u2019s role has rarely been so simple and straightforward as \u201clove interest.\u201d She\u2019s a symbol of Hyrule, she\u2019s Link\u2019s collaborator, friend, or liege lord. Even at her most damsel-ed, she is never purely \u201cthe love interest,\u201d and it\u2019s jarring to see her referred to that way as if it\u2019s a perma-facet of Zelda lore.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\"><strong>Yes, there are exceptions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The comic and cartoon adaptations of The Legend of Zelda have always been a big exception to this tradition. In Valiant Comics series from the 1990s, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/legend-zelda-link-romance-relationship-op-ed\/\">Link and Zelda express their love for each other<\/a>. And in the animated CD-i games from Philips Interactive Media, Link is always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/zelda\/458224\/a-brief-history-of-nintendo-not-letting-you-play-as-zelda\">annoyingly begging for a kiss<\/a> \u2014 which aggravates Zelda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">None of these interpretations are exactly beloved pieces of canon, so I\u2019m not sure why they would be privileged over more ambiguous interpretations that have appeared over and over again in the rest of the games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It would be a bold statement from Nintendo to choose this upcoming live-action movie as the venue for making Link and Zelda a canonical couple. And again, I think the casting itself is the strongest confirmation that that <em>won\u2019t<\/em> happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">If I\u2019m wrong, come find me in May 2027 and I\u2019ll grovel and admit that I was wrong. But until then, don\u2019t assume that Link and Zelda are a couple just because they\u2019re a guy and a gal leading a movie.
