Who doesn&#8217;t want to watch a demonic hell ninja rip the heart out of a shape-shifting wizard?\u00a0That&#8217;s money baby, and Hollywood clearly agrees.\u00a0<span><span>The beloved franchise has a long history of spilling blood outside of the confines of video games\u00a0with varying degrees of success, from the &#8217;90s films, to an\u00a0animated series, to a few live-action shows \u2013 and I&#8217;ve watched them all.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>So with the new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/02\/18\/mortal-kombat-film-debuts-with-a-bloody-action-packed-trailer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mortal Kombat film<\/a> bringing our favorite kombatants to the big screen once again,\u00a0I figure I&#8217;d give my personal ranking, from worst to best, of Mortal Kombat&#8217;s on-screen adaptations. From the surprisingly awesome to the hilariously terrible,\u00a0everything on this list is worth taking a even a peek at if you fancy yourself an MK enthusiast.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/2021\/02\/23\/ranking-mortal-kombats-on-screen-adaptations\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to watch embedded media<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span><span>Honorable Mention: Mortal Kombat: Live Tour (1995)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span>This wasn\u2019t a film or TV adaptation, but I\u2019d be remiss not to mention Mortal Kombat: Live Tour.\u00a0For those of\u00a0you who weren&#8217;t kids in the\u00a0early &#8217;90s, I really can\u2019t overstate how popular Mortal Kombat really was back then. Sure, it\u2019s still a big franchise today, but it was something of a pop culture phenomenon during its early years and their 200-city traveling stage show was\u00a0a prime example of that. Young MK fans flocked to conventions centers, theaters, and arenas to see their spine-ripping heroes in the flesh, who would engage in choreographed fights and martial arts demonstrations while garbed in pretty bad costumes (even for its time). It&#8217;s super cheesy, but\u00a0I love watching clips of this weird thing now and again. I never got to see it live, but I&#8217;d love to know if any of you were lucky enough to have your parents drag you to watch Sub-Zero backflip to techno and laser lights.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>7<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"list-item-right\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\">\n<div class=\"file file--type-image file--mimetype-image-jpeg file--view-mode-body-default-rendered\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-uri field--type-file-uri field--label-hidden gi5-uri gi5-file-uri field__item\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ranking-mortal-kombats-on-screen-adaptations-1.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<h2><span><span>Mortal Kombat: Annihilation<span>\u00a0<strong>(1997)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span><em>Annihilation<\/em>&#8216;s tagline of &#8220;Destroy All Expectations&#8221; may be the most prophetic in cinema history. What can you say about <em>Mortal Kombat\u2019<\/em>s horrific sophomore film that hasn\u2019t been said already? In short, <em>Annihilation<\/em> is an unmitigated disaster and one of the worst movies ever made. It takes everything that worked in its predecessor and uppercuts it into a spike-filled pit, trading narrative coherence for, quite literally, cheap fan service and\u00a0quantity over quality. \u201cHey look, it\u2019s Mileena, Ermac, and Baraka! Who the hell are they? Who cares, they\u2019re here \u2013 and they look like trash!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The movie recasts almost every returning character for the worst, has the lamest versions of Shao Kahn\/Shinnok ever, the plot just kind of happens, and it even ruins Animalities. Seeing Liu Kang morph into a dragon should have been amazing, but the laughably bad special effects make the old Godzilla films look like they came from Weta Workshop. In the decades since its release <em>Annihilation<\/em> has only become redeeming as a \u201cso bad it\u2019s good\u201d type of experience. As a kid who saw it opening night, though, it was no laughing matter and everyone watching alongside me knew we were in trouble the moment Johnny Cage bit the dust in its opening minutes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>6<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"list-item-right\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<div class=\"ckeditor-youtube\"><\/div>\n<h2><span><span>Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins (1995)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span><em>The Journey Begins<\/em> is a direct-to-video animated film that\u2019s really only noteworthy for how laughably bad the animation is. The movie\u2019s sole purpose was to build hype and set the table for the 1995 live-action film, focusing on the good guys\u2019 arrival to Shang Tsung\u2019s island. For some reason the film mixes traditional animation with fight scenes rendered in crude CG that looked terrible even by mid-&#8217;90s standards. On the flipside, though, it does\u00a0provide probably the first 3D representations of the characters pre-Mortal Kombat 4. Outside of some intriguing background\u00a0on Goro and his brother that I don\u2019t think ever resurfaces in the fiction again, <em>The Journey Begins<\/em> is good for a decent laugh if you have nothing better to do for an hour. The entire film can be found on YouTube, so have at it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>5<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"list-item-right\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<div class=\"ckeditor-youtube\"><\/div>\n<h2><span><span>Mortal Kombat: Conquest (1998)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span><em>Conquest<\/em> was a live-action series that ran for one season and was basically\u00a0churned out of the same daytime-TV-fantasy-show\u00a0factory that spawned <em>Xena: Warrior Princess<\/em> and <em>Hercules: The Legendary Journeys<\/em>. Unfortunately, it wasn\u2019t as good or memorable as those shows. This largely forgotten series\u00a0acts as a prequel to the franchise and stars the Great Kung Lao (legendary ancestor of the present day version), who teams up with an ex-guardsman named Siro and a thief, Taja<\/span><\/span><span><span>\u00a0(played by Kristanna Loken of <\/span><span>BloodRayne<\/span><\/span><span><span> movie fame). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The fearsome threesome spend 22 episodes battling\u00a0Shang Tsung n&#8217;\u00a0pals\u00a0as well as embarking on other\u00a0random adventures at the behest of Raiden. The show tries to cash in on the popularity of the &#8217;90s films, featuring the same visual imagery and some costume designs. It also has perhaps the second-worse-looking Shao Kahn behind<em> Annihilation<\/em>&#8216;s incarnation. <em>Conquest<\/em> isn\u2019t great, but it\u2019s a totally harmless cheesefest\u00a0with a surprisingly dark finale. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>4<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"list-item-right\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<div class=\"ckeditor-youtube\"><\/div>\n<h2><span><span>Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm (1996)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span><em>Defenders of the Realm<\/em> pulled off the impossible feat of turning this gorefest of a series into a more sanitized, family-friendly action cartoon. Officially, it serves as an alternative sequel to the first movie as well as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and centers on Earthrealm\u2019s defenders doing what they do best against various invading forces. It\u2019s not an amazing series, but it\u2019s fine for what it is and as an MK-obsessed child, I ate this cartoon right up.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><em>Defenders<\/em> did have some good things going for it. For example, Nightwolf has an actual wolf named Kiva that can jump into his chest, giving him more power. That\u2019s dope. It also has the least lame version of Stryker. <em>Defenders<\/em> is semi-infamous, though, for\u00a0Sonya Blade\u2019s annoying catchphrase of \u201c<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ry6f801Tsl0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span><span>Kombat time!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span>\u201d\u00a0I think it was supposed to be endearing\/cool in a Ben Grimm way, but winds up being this show\u2019s equivalent of the Zelda cartoon\u2019s \u201cExcuuuse Me, Princess\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Also, here\u2019s a fun fact: <em>Defenders of the Realm<\/em> featured the first-ever appearance of Quan-Chi, who appeared in <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hYnVPXFBHog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span><span><span>a single episode<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> a year before his video game debut in 1997\u2019s Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>3<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"list-item-right\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\">\n<div class=\"file file--type-image file--mimetype-image-jpeg file--view-mode-body-default-rendered\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-uri field--type-file-uri field--label-hidden gi5-uri gi5-file-uri field__item\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ranking-mortal-kombats-on-screen-adaptations-2.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<h2><span><span>Mortal Kombat: Legacy (2011)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span>This intriguing web series ran for two seasons on Machinima&#8217;s YouTube channel and was spun out of a\u00a0cool 2010 short film called <em>Mortal Kombat: Rebirth<\/em>.<em> Legacy<\/em> takes a chance by reimagining the fantastical series with a\u00a0grittier, more grounded perspective but it still respects\u00a0the source material and\u00a0the elements that make\u00a0Mortal Kombat great in the first place.\u00a0Not all of the changes land (Raiden as an asylum inmate is a little too out there for me), but most of them are pretty cool. I especially love <em>Legacy<\/em>\u2019s take on the origins stories for Johnny Cage, Scorpion, and Kitana\/Mileena.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>In a Marvel-like approach, <em>Legacy<\/em> devotes\u00a0season one to introducing the characters before bringing them together for the tournament in season two. Some\u00a0fans complained this approach was too slow at the time, but I enjoy\u00a0<em>Legacy<\/em>\u2019s commitment to world and character-building. The performances are solid, the fight scenes rock, and the production values are\u00a0good given its scope. Well, except Shao Kahn. Seriously, why is he so hard to depict\u00a0in live-action?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Anyways, season two takes\u00a0a hit due to\u00a0a ton of recasting that hurt the continuity; Johnny Cage\u2019s change\u00a0in performers bummed me out most. It did, however, feature Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa reprising the role of Shang Tsung on-screen, years before he did again in Mortal Kombat 11. Unfortunately, season 3 never saw the light of day despite plans to make it happen. <em>Legacy<\/em> definitely isn\u2019t your parents&#8217; Mortal Kombat, but it\u2019s a bold and fascinating remix worth checking out.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>2<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"list-item-right\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\">\n<div class=\"file file--type-image file--mimetype-image-jpeg file--view-mode-body-default-rendered\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-uri field--type-file-uri field--label-hidden gi5-uri gi5-file-uri field__item\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ranking-mortal-kombats-on-screen-adaptations-3.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<h2><span><span>Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion\u2019s Revenge (2020)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span><em>Scorpion\u2019s Revenge<\/em> serves as a reimagining of the events of the first game that puts Hell&#8217;s\u00a0favorite vengeful ninja front and center. The animation and character design look sharp\u00a0and the performances, like\u00a0Joel McHale\u2019s Johnny Cage, are pretty good as well.\u00a0The action is a blast\u00a0to watch and is incredibly violent; <em>Scorpion\u2019s Revenge<\/em> is the goriest MK adaptation by a mile. Purists may be put off by how the film takes heavy creative liberties with the established fiction (namely making Liu Kang look kind of useless), which makes me wonder if telling a Scorpion-centric story using the original tournament as a backdrop was perhaps a bad call. Still, if you\u2019re looking for a fun way to kill 80 minutes and love you some Hanzo Hasashi, <em>Scorpion\u2019s Revenge<\/em> is an entertaining and kick-ass martial-arts flick. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>1<\/h2>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--list-item paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"list-item\">\n<div class=\"list-item-right\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-copy field--type-text-long field--label-hidden gi5-field-copy gi5-text-long field__item\">\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\">\n<div class=\"file file--type-image file--mimetype-image-jpeg file--view-mode-body-default-rendered\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-uri field--type-file-uri field--label-hidden gi5-uri gi5-file-uri field__item\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ranking-mortal-kombats-on-screen-adaptations-4.jpg\" typeof=\"Image\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" \/> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<h2><span><span>Mortal Kombat (1995)<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span><span>I mean, c\u2019mon. You knew this was topping the list even if you hadn\u2019t read my piece gushing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/opinion\/2020\/10\/22\/3-simple-reasons-mortal-kombat-remains-a-perfect-video-game-movie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all of the things this movie does right<\/a>. <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> remains the gold standard for live-action MK goodness as well as video game films in general. It captures everything that works about the games and translates them almost effortlessly to the big-screen. Sure, s<\/span><\/span><span><span>ome aspects haven\u2019t aged gracefully (namely the CG effects) but the film maintains the same narrative and tonal balance of the games in that it&#8217;s violent\u00a0and self-serious but also completely aware, and proud, of its absurdity. Most of all, it does a great job of properly introducing newcomers to its world while still satisfying long-time fans. That\u2019s something many adaptations still struggle to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> crams a ton of MK goodness without going overboard, making it easy to follow and avoiding fan service bloat. The characters are well-casted (even the Hail Mary of Christopher Lambert\u2019s Raiden), the world and atmosphere oozes MK, and the fights are awesome. And, of course, there\u2019s that <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/EAwWPadFsOA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signature theme song <\/a>that still resonates with fans decades later. <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> achieves a near flawless victory that few video game films have come close to matching. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Oh, and somehow this movie <em>still<\/em> has the best live-action version of Shao Khan, which is both amazing and sad at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><p>We&#8217;ll see where Warner Bros. <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> ranks on this list come April,&nbsp;but that&#8217;s where things stand for now.
