Warcraft<\/em> director Duncan Jones shared the first look at his next project Tuesday, Rogue Trooper<\/em>. Based on the 2000 AD comics character, the film is notable for being animated in Unreal Engine 5, the video game design tool used to create some of the most popular games of 2025, like Split Fiction<\/a><\/em> and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are so excited to share a first look of the film and show the amazing fidelity with which the team have used our actors on set performances to drive the animated characters,\u201d producer Stuart Fenegan said in a news release. \u201cThat level of detail and nuance was a priority from day one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rogue Trooper<\/em> will star Aneurin Barnard as the titular character. Hayley Atwell, Sean Bean, and Asa Butterfield will also lend their voices to the project.<\/p>\n

Jones\u2019 Rogue Trooper<\/em> film has been a long time coming. It was first confirmed in 2018<\/a>, the same year the director\u2019s latest film, Mute<\/em>, was released. Jones is perhaps best known to gamers as the writer an director of 2016\u2019s Warcraft<\/em><\/a>, based on Blizzard\u2019s series of the same name. At the time, for Polygon, Philip Kollar called Warcraft<\/em> \u201cjust good enough to make me aware of what could have been \u2014 and just bad enough to make me despair that it wasn’t.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film will follow the \u201cGenetic Infantryman,\u201d originally created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons, \u201cwho finds himself the sole-survivor of\u00a0an invasion force. Desperate\u00a0to\u00a0track down the traitor\u00a0who sold him and his\u00a0comrades\u00a0out, the super soldier\u00a0is\u00a0accompanied\u00a0by three killed-in-action squad mates, whose personalities have been stored in his gun, helmet and backpack.\u201d You can check out the first images from the film below.<\/p>\n

Rogue Trooper<\/em> doesn\u2019t have a release date or trailer yet, but expect more news to come out of San Diego Comic-Con next month, as Jones excitedly teased in the news release, \u201cAHHHHHHHHHHHH!\u00a0WE\u2019RE ALMOST FINISHED!\u00a0SEE YOU AT SDCC!!\u201d<\/p>\n
