Nintendo Switch 2<\/a> will launch June 5 with an impressive mix of splashy launch titles<\/a>, from the first-party must-have Mario Kart World<\/a><\/em> to third-party ports of games the Switch couldn\u2019t run, like Cyberpunk 2077<\/a><\/em>. With the launch of a new generation also comes the possibility of old titles and series getting a renewed spotlight, whether via sequels or full-on remakes, like how the first Switch saw the The Legend of Zelda: Link\u2019s Awakening<\/em> remake<\/a> and new versions of Pok\u00e9mon Yellow<\/em>. As its game library grows, here\u2019s to hoping it includes a revival of one of Nintendo\u2019s weirdest franchises: Pok\u00e9mon Mystery Dungeon, in which you played a human transformed into a Pok\u00e9mon.<\/p>\n

Spinning off from Spike Chunsoft\u2019s Mystery Dungeon series, the Pok\u00e9mon Mystery Dungeon games task you with venturing through randomly generated dungeons and battling other Pok\u00e9mon in turn-based combat reminiscent of the mainline games. You also take on jobs like rescuing Pok\u00e9mon or delivering items. At times, these side quests would let you cross paths with Legendaries like Rayquaza, fleshing out their characters as more than just exciting Box Art Pok\u00e9mon to capture.<\/p>\n

The first games in the series, Pok\u00e9mon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team<\/em> and Blue Rescue Team<\/em>, are nearly 20 years old, having debuted on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS in 2005. They\u2019re a stark departure from the \u201cGotta catch \u2019em all!\u201d nature of the mainline Pok\u00e9mon games. Instead of throwing Pok\u00e9balls at the little dudes, you become<\/em> a little dude. Your answers to a personality quiz<\/a> (that would\u2019ve been right at home as a post on your mid-2000s DeviantArt page) determine which Pok\u00e9mon you become.<\/p>\n

The series saw a few releases across DS and Nintendo 3DS from 2005 to 2015, when the last new entry launched. It was followed by a remake of the original games, called Pok\u00e9mon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX<\/em><\/a>, for Nintendo Switch in 2020. It\u2019s a return to the series\u2019 original gameplay and personality quiz, though the DX<\/em> edition lets you choose which Pok\u00e9mon you wanted to embody if you don\u2019t like your result. Notably, Rescue Team DX<\/em> featured a new beautiful, painterly art style.<\/p>\n

Rescue Team DX<\/em> received a mixed response at launch, but did quickly sell over a million copies<\/a>. Nonetheless, Nintendo marches to the beat of its own drum (case in point \u2014 it\u2019s reviving Kirby Air Ride<\/em> 22 years later for a Nintendo Switch 2 sequel, Kirby Air Riders<\/em><\/a>, due out later this year).<\/p>\n

In the years since the last original Pok\u00e9mon Mystery Dungeon title, The Pok\u00e9mon Company has released three new generations of mainline titles as well as the new Legends series. There are so goddamn many<\/em> more Pok\u00e9mon that a new Mystery Dungeon could include and let the player become \u2014 you know you want to play as the small dumb apple Fuecoco or drumming monkey Grookey. With Nintendo being Nintendo, the Pok\u00e9mon Mystery Dungeon series might be on ice for some time \u2014 or maybe it\u2019ll get announced for the Switch 2 at July\u2019s Pok\u00e9mon Presents. You know I\u2019m hoping for the latter.<\/p>\n
