{"id":1212541,"date":"2026-02-21T17:13:53","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T17:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/601980\/gigantamax-machamp-counters-weakness-and-battle-tips-in-pokemon-go"},"modified":"2026-02-21T17:13:53","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T17:13:53","slug":"gigantamax-rillaboom-counters-weakness-and-battle-tips-in-pokemon-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcader.org\/news\/gigantamax-rillaboom-counters-weakness-and-battle-tips-in-pokemon-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Gigantamax Rillaboom counters, weakness, and battle tips in Pok\u00e9mon Go"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/gigantamax-rillaboom-counters-weakness-and-battle-tips-in-pokemon-go.jpg\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><strong>Gigantamax<\/strong> <strong>Rillaboom <\/strong>is making its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/pokemon-go-guide\/467353\/gigantamax-pokemon-get-catch\">Gigantamax <\/a>debut in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/game\/pokemon-go\/38713\">Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/a><\/em>, and as usual with these types of Pok\u00e9mon, it\u2019ll be tough to take down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Rillaboom will specifically be around during the weekend portion of the \u201cSerene Retreat\u201d event, from May 31 at 6 a.m. until June 1 at 9 p.m. in your local time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Below we list Gigantamax Rillaboom\u2019s best counters and weaknesses in <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>, as well as general battle tips for the big guy.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\" id=\"gigantamax-rillaboom-weakness\">Gigantamax Rillaboom weakness<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Rillaboom is a pure grass-type, so it has a ton of weaknesses: <strong>flying<\/strong>-, <strong>poison<\/strong>-, <strong>bug<\/strong>-, <strong>fire<\/strong>-, and <strong>ice<\/strong>-type moves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">That being said, it\u2019ll be resistant against ground-, water-, grass-, and electric-type moves, so don\u2019t use those unless they\u2019re just fast moves to help charge the max meter.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\" id=\"gigantamax-rillaboom-best-counters\">Gigantamax Rillaboom best counters<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Try to bring at least one of these attackers:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gigantamax Charizard <\/strong>with Fire Spin or Dragon Breath (G-Max Wildfire)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamax Darmanitan<\/strong> with Fire Fang (Max Flare)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamax Moltres <\/strong>with Wind Attack (Max Airstream)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamax Cinderace<\/strong> with Fire Spin (Max Flare)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">You don\u2019t really have to care about your Gigantamax Charizard\u2019s fast move unless you\u2019re using it to build the meter as a pinch hitter. Hopefully you have enough other players that it won\u2019t come to that, but Dragon Breath is just a faster attack than its other options, which is why we have it listed above.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">This is all to say that, yes, bring a strong fire-type and Rillaboom should go down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">For defenders\/tanks, bring one or two of the following:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dynamax Blissey<\/strong> with Pound<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamax Corviknight<\/strong> with Sand Attack<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamax Butterfree <\/strong>with Bug Bite<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamax\/Gigantamax Venusaur<\/strong> with Vine Whip<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">These guys\u2019 job is just to soak up the damage from Rillaboom while generating as much energy as possible with their fast attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I hesitated putting Corviknight on this list because Dynamax Rookidee made its debut just this week <em>and<\/em> Corviknight has a Gigantamax form \u2014 so to me, Dynamax Corviknight isn\u2019t worth investing in unless you have a <em>ton <\/em>of Rookidee Candy sitting around. It resists Rillaboom\u2019s attacks well, so I did include it, but keep that in mind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Butterfree is a funny one, but it does heavily resist Rillaboom\u2019s grass-type moves, so\u2026 go nuts with it, if that\u2019s what you got. As usual Blissey is way to go, but if you still don\u2019t have one, these alternatives should work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Consider just bringing the&nbsp;<em>strongest<\/em>&nbsp;Dynamax or Gigantamax Pok\u00e9mon you have. If you have a maxed out Gigantamax Gengar and your Dynamax Darmanitan isn\u2019t leveled (and you don\u2019t have the means to power it up), just bring your Gengar.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-none\" id=\"general-gigantamax-rillaboom-tips\">General Gigantamax Rillaboom tips<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">If you\u2019ve been struggling in Max Battles, here\u2019s some general tips to survive \u2014 and make sure you\u2019re an asset to your team. Gigantamax battles involve way more strategy than the usual rampant tapping that you do in raids, so make sure to know what you\u2019re doing before jumping in.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make sure you have enough players.<\/strong>&nbsp;High-efficiency groups with maxed out investments can take down the Rillaboom with fewer people, but practically, if you don\u2019t have hundreds of spare candy and even more Stardust laying around, this isn\u2019t going to be an option for you. Make sure you have as many people as possible to ensure that you get your drummer gorilla.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t sleep on Max Spirit and Max Guard<\/strong>. Teams work best when there\u2019s a variety of moves, not just maxed-out attacks. Each player should bring Pok\u00e9mon with the defensive and healing moves unlocked as well. Max Guard will focus single-target damage towards you and reduce the damage taken; Max Spirit will heal the whole party. These moves are really important to make sure your damage-dealers can keep dishing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember to swap to super effective moves when it\u2019s time to Dynamax<\/strong>. For&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/pokemon-go-guide\/449273\/dynamax-pokemon-get-catch-max-battles\">Dynamax Pok\u00e9mon<\/a>, their max moves are determined by whatever type their fast move is. This means if you have a Darmanitan with Fire Fang, it will know Max Flare. A Gengar with Lick will know Max Phantasm. Take advantage of this and make sure to swap to a Pok\u00e9mon that will deal super effective damage to your target before Dynamaxing, if you can.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus on your fast moves<\/strong>. You want to spam your fast moves to build up that Dynamax meter and often times, using your charge move is actually a DPS loss when compared to the damage you could be doing with your max move will be. Spam those attacks!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level up a few \u2018mons, but you don\u2019t have to go too hard<\/strong>. Depending on your group size, you absolutely do not need to max out all your Dynamax Pok\u00e9mon to level 40-50. While this will make it easier on the rest of your group, if this isn\u2019t an investment you can make, you don\u2019t have to stress about it. Power things up as high as you can afford to, but don\u2019t fret if you don\u2019t have a maxed out Pok\u00e9mon.<\/li>\n<li>All of that said,&nbsp;<strong>make sure to come as prepared as you can be<\/strong>. This is a team effort and there\u2019s a chance that a full group of four can still fail. Do not just bring your unleveled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/pokemon-go-guide\/447546\/to-the-max-special-research-quest-rewards\">Dynamax Wooloo<\/a>&nbsp;expecting a free ride to a powerful Pok\u00e9mon. (After all, if&nbsp;<em>everyone<\/em>&nbsp;does that, then you certainly won\u2019t clear the battle.)
