The live-action remake \u2014 originally intended to bow on Disney Plus \u2014 crushed at the U.S. box office, grossing $183 million over the Memorial Day weekend (with a haul of over $304 million worldwide). It\u2019s a staggering number for a Disney character who has, through merchandise and mascotability, far outpaced reception to the original movie; <em>Lilo &amp; Stitch<\/em> only made $145.8 million over its complete theatrical run in 2002.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Disney\u2019s blockbuster win comes at a time when the theatrical business is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-03-31\/box-office-is-bleak-heres-how-local-theaters-are-surviving-the-downturn#:~:text=Domestic%20box%20office%20totals%20for,report%20from%20Gower%20Street%20Analytics.\">struggling to lure in audiences<\/a> to achieve the box-office numbers of a pre-pandemic era. The studios are also contending with their own internal logic: Development on a <em>Lilo &amp; Stitch<\/em> remake began all the way back in 2016, with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/news\/lilo-and-stitch-live-action-remake-disney-1202967403\/\">an official announcement arriving in 2018<\/a>, when Disney was poised to send the feature straight to its then-untitled Netflix competitor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">With COVID-19 impacting development and production, <em>Lilo &amp; Stitch<\/em> only took shape in earnest in 2022, when <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23180701\/marcel-the-shell-with-shoes-on-review-my-neighbor-totoro\">Marcel the Shell<\/a><\/em>\u2019s Dean Fleischer Camp came on board to replace Jon Chu (<em>Wicked<\/em>) as director \u2014 but even then the remake was still slated for Disney Plus. A release calendar jumbled by the pandemic and delays from the Hollywood strikes paved the way for <em>Lilo &amp; Stitch <\/em>to arrive in theaters. Reassembling <em>Moana 2<\/em> from a Disney Plus series into a movie that grossed over $1 billion probably didn\u2019t hurt the ambitious plan to open <em>Lilo &amp; Stitch <\/em>in 4,410 theaters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/disney-scores-record-breaking-183-million-opening-with-a-movie-meant-for-disney-plus-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Lilo &amp; Stitch<\/em> makes its humungous bank alongside another cheerleader for the theatrical business. Tom Cruise, who fought for <em>Top Gun: Marverick<\/em>\u2019s post-pandemic theatrical release to the tune of $1.4 billion worldwide, returned to the big screen this weekend with <em>Mission: Impossible \u2014 The Final Reckoning<\/em>. The conclusion-ish to the 30-year-old action series started off its run with $77 million and faces little competition in the weeks ahead. Maybe every weekend just needs a Barbenheimer?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The days of Disney Plus being a premium content platform may be over. CEO Bob Iger has been open about the need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23603081\/disney-marvel-release-schedule-2023-phase-5\">scale down Marvel\u2019s output on the service<\/a>. Not even fans of <em>Andor<\/em> can justify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/paultassi\/2025\/05\/14\/there-will-never-be-another-andor\/\">a $645 million dollar two-season price tag<\/a>, and rightfully proclaimed the end of an era after the recent finale.
