Guillermo del Toro recently spoke at the Cannes Film Festival, sharing some details about his upcoming film Frankenstein<\/em>, set to release on Netflix later this year. As reported by Variety<\/a>, he said he\u2019s been asked whether his movie will have \u201creally scary scenes.\u201d That prompted the Academy Award-winning director to ponder how people would receive the movie made: \u201cFor the first time, I considered that. It\u2019s an emotional story for me. It\u2019s as personal as anything. I\u2019m asking a question about being a father, being a son\u2026 I\u2019m not doing a horror movie \u2014 ever. I\u2019m not trying to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it can be confusing to hear a man with story and producer credits on a film literally called Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark<\/a><\/em> (adapted from the excellent book of the same name) say he\u2019s \u201cnot trying to do\u201d horror, that mindset aligns with most of his career.<\/p>\n

Del Toro\u2019s early movies, like Cronos<\/em> and The Devil\u2019s Backbone<\/em>, can certainly be classified as horror. While his later films feature frightening elements, though, they break away from conventional horror and lean more into gothic fantasies and dark fairy tales. I was as scared as anyone by the Pale Man in Pan\u2019s Labyrinth<\/em><\/a>, perhaps his most famous film, but that doesn\u2019t make it a horror movie. It\u2019s more of a fantasy and a parable, examining the realities of war through the eyes and imaginative reinterpretations of a young girl.<\/p>\n

Though Crimson Peak<\/em> tells a ghost story<\/a>, it features romance at its core. And The Shape of Water<\/a><\/em> continues a focus on romance, as well as telling a story centered around embracing the Other. With an ending that sees protagonist Elisa (Sally Hawkins) becoming a mythical creature herself, it\u2019s more of a fairy tale than a horror film.<\/p>\n

Emphasizing with the ostracized is at the core of plenty of del Toro\u2019s work, whether its Elisa and The Amphibian Man\u2019s fairy-tale-esque love story or Hellboy\u2019s pursuit of normalcy in del Toro\u2019s adaptation of Mike Mignola\u2019s comics. \u201cThe first time I thought I was going to avenge the creature was when Marilyn Monroe is coming out [of 1954\u2019s The Creature from the Black Lagoon<\/em>] in The Seven Year Itch<\/em> with Tom Ewell, and she says the creature just needed somebody to like him,\u201d del Toro said at Cannes. \u201cI fell in love with Marilyn, and I fell in love with the creature in that scene at a very early age. And I thought, you know, all we have is people that look at people the wrong way. That\u2019s what we have in this world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t expect Frankenstein<\/em> to be any different. \u201c[F]or me, it\u2019s an incredibly emotional movie,\u201d del Toro said. With its focus on the parental relationship between Victor Frankenstein and his creation, Frankenstein<\/em> sounds similar to del Toro\u2019s last film, the stop-motion Pinocchio<\/em>. \u201c[Geppetto] has asked, almost like in a horror tale: \u2018I want my child back.\u2019 And the child comes back in a way that he doesn\u2019t recognize,\u201d del Toro told Polygon<\/a> about Pinocchio<\/em> in 2022. It marked his return to animation after a pooping burglar destroyed his first attempt at the medium<\/a>. Now that\u2019s<\/em> what I\u2019d consider a horror story.<\/p>\n
