I will take good news where I can get it and today that good news comes from Ecco the Dolphin<\/a> creator Ed Annunziata. In an interview with Xbox Wire, Annunziata said remasters of the original Ecco game<\/a> and its sequel are coming \u2014 plus something new. He pointed folks to the Ecco the Dolphin website<\/a>, which shows a countdown to April 26, 2026.<\/p>\n

Yes, it\u2019s a while to wait for maybe<\/em> a new game (after all, it could be that the remasters are coming next April and a new title is even further off), but this cult classic has fans that dream of having another chance to sidescroll across the ocean as Ecco the dolphin. That is, if they can progress past the first few challenges; the franchise is known for its difficulty, including Ecco: Defender of the Future<\/em>, the third-person (third-dolphin?) 3D incarnation of the series. While Annunziata didn\u2019t work on this sequel, Defender of the Future<\/em> captured the rigor and eerie coziness of the first games: excellent atmospheric music, scary beings hiding in the dark, and a steep learning curve. The undoubtedly successful design of the game is, though, source to one of my biggest disappointments in life: I\u2019ll never get to be a dolphin.<\/p>\n

Apparently that sentiment isn\u2019t too far off from Annunziata\u2019s inspriations, though: \u201cI started to dream about a game where you experience life as a dolphin,\u201d he told Xbox Wire. \u201cI chose a dolphin because I figured it\u2019s as close to a person as all the whales.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a big-brain thought for a big-brain guy, who also mentioned in the interview that he thinks two things gamers possess in droves are \u201chigher than average IQ\u201d and \u201clove [that] can really make things happen in the real world.\u201d Here he\u2019s also touching on the game\u2019s legacy for promoting awareness about caring for the ocean and the life inside, something that naturally came out of his appreciation for the ocean as a Pacific Islander.<\/p>\n

\u201cImagine a culture connected directly to the ocean\u2019s ecosystems over generations. Growing and evolving together, humans contribute to the ecosystem rather than taxing it,\u201d he said to Xbox Wire. \u201cOver time, they would learn about all the ocean cycles and how to get into sync with them. Anything that fosters a connection between humans and the ocean should be enthusiastically embraced.\u201d<\/p>\n

The remasters of Ecco the Dolphin<\/em> and Ecco: Tides of Time<\/em> will be developed by Annunziata and the \u201centire original team.\u201d These remasters, nor the new, yet-to-be-named Ecco game, do not yet have release dates.<\/p>\n
