The ad makes it dramatically clear: Stealing Shrek will get you hard time in the slam when you&#8217;re inevitably busted for your criminal ways.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve likely seen this but just in case, let me be perfectly clear: This is <em>not <\/em>parody.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-video\" data-nosnippet >\n<div class=\"video-aspect-box\"><iframe data-lazy-priority=\"low\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PLzy-IJg4_4\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It was, and is, overwrought and silly, and so of course it inspired numerous parodies and memes: The British comedy series The IT Crowd did a particularly good one a few years after the original aired\u2014in fact the old URL, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"http:\/\/piracyisacrime.com\">piracyisacrime.com<\/a>, now directs to The IT Crowd Clip on YouTube. I urge you to watch it. The ad itself was only around for a short time, but &#8220;you wouldn&#8217;t download a car&#8221; has endured in shitpost form for decades; it&#8217;s practically embedded in the fabric of the internet at this point.<\/p>\n<p>(Also, it turns out that some of you absolutely <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Fb7N-JtQWGI?si=RJlu7lHR4lzMoBvU\" target=\"_blank\">would download a car<\/a> if you could.)<\/p>\n<p>But as good as many of these parodies are, none are as ridiculous (and funny) as the recent discovery that the world&#8217;s best-known anti-piracy ad may have used a pirated font.<\/p>\n<p>The distinctive font used in the ad appears to be FF Confidential, created by Just van Rossum in 1992. But there&#8217;s another font called XBand Rough that&#8217;s virtually identical, and when journalist <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/melissa.news\/post\/3lnh43ia5vk2x\" target=\"_blank\">Melissa Lewis<\/a> reached out to van Rossum about it, he told her XBand Rough is an &#8220;illegal clone&#8221; of FF Confidential.<\/p>\n<p>This is where it gets interesting. After all this, another Bluesky user named Rib used the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/fontforge.org\/en-US\/\" target=\"_blank\">FontForge<\/a> tool on a PDF file from the old anti-piracy campaign, available via the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20051223202935\/http:\/\/www.piracyisacrime.com:80\/press\/pdfs\/150605_8PP_brochure.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Wayback Machine<\/a>, and discovered the file in question uses the XBand Rough font\u2014the clone.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"van-image-figure inline-layout\" data-bordeaux-image-check >\n<div class='image-full-width-wrapper'>\n<div class='image-widthsetter' style=\"max-width:1152px;\">\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:139.06%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"24YoEzk9gcPULfJXBEEMwR\" name=\"font\" alt=\"By using FontForge on a PDF from the website for the campaign (web.archive.org\/web\/20051223...); I can confirm that they are indeed using the illegal clone version of the font, rather than the licensed one!\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/in-the-most-delicious-irony-imaginable-the-notorious-early-2000s-you-wouldnt-steal-a-car-anti-piracy-campaign-may-have-used-an-illegal-font.png\" mos=\"\" align=\"middle\" fullscreen=\"1\" width=\"1152\" height=\"1602\" attribution=\"\" endorsement=\"\" class=\"expandable\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\" class=\" inline-layout\"><span class=\"credit\" itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Rib\/Melissa Lewis (Bluesky))<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I checked it myself, and sure enough the embedded font in the PDF comes up as XBand Rough, and not FF Confidential.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, this isn&#8217;t proof of some deeply-buried wrongdoing\u2014it&#8217;s entirely possible the campaign&#8217;s graphic designers had no clue the font was a clone of an existing work. But the irony of a hard-ass anti-piracy campaign making use of an unlicensed knockoff font, well, it&#8217;s hard to overlook. Luckily, van Rossum, the creator of the FF Confidential font the campaign didn&#8217;t use, thinks it&#8217;s all very funny.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I knew my font was used for the campaign and that a pirated clone named XBand Rough existed,&#8221; van Rossum told <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/torrentfreak.com\/you-wouldnt-steal-a-car-but-would-you-pirate-a-font-250424\/\" target=\"_blank\">TorrentFreak<\/a>. &#8220;I did not know that the campaign used XBand Rough and not FF Confidential, though.
