And by modern I mean brown. The mud\u2019s brown, the water\u2019s brown, and the grass is brown. It\u2019s all extremely brown and I\u2019m not sure how to feel about that as someone who was wowed by Bethesda\u2019s bright fantasy world 19 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Comparing screenshots between old <em>Oblivion<\/em> and <em>Oblivion Remastered<\/em> make it pretty obvious: There\u2019s a thick haze hanging over everything that darkens every scene. The entire world looks like a bonus level in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/22463516\/powerwash-simulator-review-chill-game-mechanics\">PowerWash Simulator<\/a><\/em> waiting to be blasted back to its original look.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe title=\"Oblivion Remake Vs Original 2006 Comparison PC Max Settings\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1jZXzv1-CmA?rel=0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In terms of detail, it certainly looks improved. Torches glow in the darkness, water shimmers in the sunlight, and docks look like actual wood and not mossy stone. But the actual mossy stone is now charcoal for some reason. The original game was much brighter, lightening up the grassy hills and trees, but Unreal Engine 5 has the remaster looking burnt.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-image-compare alignnone wp-block-vox-media-image-compare\">\n<div class=\"c-image-compare__images\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/oblivion-remastered-sure-has-a-lot-of-brown-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/oblivion-remastered-sure-has-a-lot-of-brown-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Interior sections in <em>Oblivion Remastered <\/em>are a bit better. The amazing intro to the game where you escape prison with Patrick Stewart is all suffocating stone corridors and the occasional beam of light bleeding through the ceiling. It\u2019s surprisingly close to the chilly vibe of the original. In fact, it might be an example of what the improved lighting gets you when it\u2019s not working with overcooked textures.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-image-compare alignnone wp-block-vox-media-image-compare\">\n<div class=\"c-image-compare__images\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/oblivion-remastered-sure-has-a-lot-of-brown-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/oblivion-remastered-sure-has-a-lot-of-brown-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The pale character faces from the original didn\u2019t survive the remaster, which is mostly an improvement to me. In a perfect world, we\u2019d get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/the-elder-scrolls\/i-hope-they-didnt-make-the-oblivion-npcs-hot\/\">weirdly smeared NPC mugs<\/a> of the past in 4K, but I\u2019ll take the hyper-detailed wrinkles and pores if it means better facial animations can exist. And don\u2019t worry, when they open their mouths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/news\/562651\/oblivion-remastered-voice-lines-dialogue-goofy\">they still sound just as goofy as before.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I just can\u2019t get over how muddy the outside has become in the remaster. But I\u2019m also the person who won\u2019t forgive Virtuos for turning the stylistic <em>Dark Souls<\/em> bonfire into a realistic fire in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/game\/dark-souls-remastered\/40356\">Dark Souls: Remastered<\/a><\/em>. It\u2019s also entirely possible that <em>Oblivion Remastered<\/em>\u2019s visuals coalesce the deeper you get into it and explore new areas. If they don\u2019t, I\u2019m at least happy that the original <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/22330\/The_Elder_Scrolls_IV_Oblivion_Game_of_the_Year_Edition_2009\/\"><em>Oblivion<\/em> is still available<\/a> whenever I want to go back.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/gaming\/562912\/elder-scrolls-4-oblivion-remaster-graphics-brown-comparison\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Oblivion Remastered game is finally here and it looks, well, modern.
