An announcement<\/a> at TerryPratchett.com<\/a> revealed today that the estate of the late fantasy author, one of the UK\u2019s all-time bestselling writers<\/a>, is opening up the \u201cDiscworld graphic novel universe,\u201d a planned series of comics adaptations of Pratchett\u2019s Discworld books that will come from different publishers, writers, and artists. Pratchett\u2019s Discworld setting was the basis for more than 40 fantasy novels, ranging from light comedy and genre satire, to YA coming-of-age books, to deeply humanistic, dark horror stories. The first three books announced for graphic-novel adaptation cover a representative range of his work.<\/p>\n

The initial titles being adapted are 2001\u2019s Thief of Time<\/em> and 2003\u2019s Wee Free Men<\/em> and Monstrous Regiment<\/em>. Thief of Time<\/em> will be adapted by Gary Chudleigh<\/a>, illustrated by frequent Marvel Comics artist<\/a> Rachael Stott<\/a>. It will come out April 2, 2026, and is available for preorder now<\/a> from Doubleday Books. Wee Free Men <\/em>will be adapted by Pratchett\u2019s daughter, author Rhianna Pratchett<\/a>. No artist has been announced yet, but the book is set for a spring 2027 publication from Puffin Books. Monstrous Regiment <\/em>does not yet have a creative team or publisher announced.<\/p>\n

Each of these three books represents a different entry point for Pratchett\u2019s work. Wee Free Men<\/em> is a YA novel, the first in a series of books centering on a rural witch-in-training named Tiffany Aching. Tiffany grows up and grows into her power over the course of the series, in the process earning the loyalty of the Nac Mac Feegle, a species of tiny blue men with pronounced Scottish accents who serve as some of the latter-day Discworld\u2019s most potent comic relief. Thief of Time<\/em> is an adult novel concerned with Death (the character) and a universal force trying to eliminate human uncertainty (and therefore humans as a whole) from the world.<\/p>\n

And Monstrous Regiment<\/em>, an excellent entry point to the sprawling Discworld continuity<\/a>, is a standalone novel about a young woman who enters the military disguised as a man in order to escape a particularly malevolent and disintegrating god and the country it rules.<\/p>\n

These aren\u2019t the first of Pratchett\u2019s works to be adapted as graphic novels: The Discworld series\u2019 first books,\u00a0The Colour of Magic<\/em> and The Light Fantastic<\/em><\/a>, were previously adapted together. 1987\u2019s Mort<\/a><\/em>, 1989\u2019s Guards! Guards!<\/a><\/em>, and 1992\u2019s Small Gods<\/a><\/em> have all gotten previous visual adaptations. But the new \u201cgraphic novel universe\u201d initiative seems aimed at bringing more of Pratchett\u2019s extensive body of work into comics form, through a variety of different authors and artists.<\/p>\n
