Men (22.8%) were more likely to prioritize investing in gacha rolls over, say, food and rent than women (14.8%).<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">While almost one-quarter of those surveyed regretted spending money in video games, the amount of people who purchased microtransactions increased by almost 6% from 2024\u2019s survey. Positive responses to the statements \u201cI\u2019m willing to pay to have an advantage in-game\u201d and \u201cI can\u2019t enjoy the game if I don\u2019t make in-game purchases\u201d grew several percentage points among both men and women compared to last year, even if average monthly purchases fell slightly and the majority of folks in their twenties continue to avoid such purchases altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Video games with in-app purchases, especially mobile apps and those with gacha mechanics, continue to bring in big money worldwide. In March 2025, combined spending through Apple\u2019s App Store and Google Play <a href=\"https:\/\/sensortower.com\/blog\/top-10-worldwide-mobile-games-by-revenue-and-downloads-in-march-2025\">reached $6.79 billion<\/a>, with Japan alone responsible for 14.3% of that revenue. Some of the biggest game include <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/game\/playerunknowns-battlegrounds\/39654\">PUBG Mobile<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/game\/candy-crush-saga\/8427\">Candy Crush Saga<\/a><\/em>, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/game\/pokemon-go\/38713\">Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/a><\/em>, but for every well-known game bringing in a profit, there are two or three massively outperforming them with little to no coverage on sites like Polygon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Like it or not, these games are only growing more and more successful over time, even if folks like those surveyed in Japan are spending money begrudgingly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/news\/559840\/japan-survey-twenty-year-old-gaming-spending-habits\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Japanese banking subsidiary SMBC Consumer Finance\u2019s annual survey of financial awareness in the country\u2019s 20- to 29-year-olds revealed some troubling findings about the demographic\u2019s gaming habits, Automaton reports.
