The United States\u2019 tariff circus continued over the weekend, with the U.S. government announcing, via the Customs and Border Protection agency<\/a>, tariff exclusions for the technology sector that cover devices such as computers and smartphones. But what\u2019s not included in the carve-out is video game consoles, which fall under a trade classification for toys, not technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To make things even more confusing and uncertain, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Sunday on ABC\u2019s This Week<\/em><\/a> that separate tariffs for electronics are on the way, and are expected to be rolled out \u201cin probably a month or two.\u201d The electronics on the exemption list released Friday<\/a> are still subject to 20% tariffs, just not \u2014 for the moment \u2014 a total of 145% tariffs on Chinese imports. Similarly, components used in video game consoles are exempt from the larger tariffs, but still face 20% tariffs that are applied to all Chinese imports. That number is likely to change, per Lutnick\u2019s comments regarding the upcoming semiconductor tariffs.<\/p>\n

U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s far-reaching tariffs were announced hours after Nintendo announced the June 5 release date for its Switch 2 console, causing the company to delay the previously announced pre-order date<\/a> for U.S. and Canadian customers. At that time, Trump had announced major tariffs on dozens of countries, including a 46% tariff on Vietnamese imports; Nintendo had shifted a good portion of its production to Vietnam during the first Trump administration<\/a>. Those tariffs are on hold for 90 days, save for a universal 10% tariff.<\/p>\n

Beyond Nintendo, however, other console makers face hard decisions about pricing in the face of Trump\u2019s tariffs. Should tariffs stay at 125% for Chinese-made goods, consoles from Microsoft and Sony could go up in price; in fact, Sony announced on Monday a price increase for its PlayStation 5 consoles<\/a> in Europe, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. The speed at which tariffs have been changing, too, is creating increased uncertainty in the market.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an unusual situation causing much chaos, and one that we need to consider for all sectors, even the video game industry,\u201d industry analysts Niko Partners wrote in a blog post last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n
