The update will go live on Tuesday, April 15, with a special launch stream on Larian&#8217;s YouTube <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h5ZC8Y_X78Y&#038;ab_channel=Larian%3AChannelFromHell\" target=\"_blank\">Channel From Hell<\/a> set for the following day.<\/p>\n<p>All of BG3&#8217;s numbered updates have been quite substantial: Patch five at the end of 2023 introduced the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/baldurs-gate-3s-permadeath-honour-mode-has-made-act-1-my-own-personal-groundhog-day-and-i-am-either-having-a-breakdown-or-becoming-a-god\/\" target=\"_blank\">permadeath Honour mode<\/a>, while the most recent patch seven <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/baldurs-gate\/baldur-s-gate-3-s-new-evil-endings-are-so-nasty-they-re-hard-to-watch-and-there-s-a-unique-variation-for-each-origin-character\/\" target=\"_blank\">expanded BG3&#8217;s evil endings<\/a> with new cutscenes. Taken together, they add up to a sort of &#8220;Definitive Edition&#8221; final pass, much as Larian did with its Original Sin games.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-video\" data-nosnippet >\n<div class=\"video-aspect-box\"><iframe data-lazy-priority=\"low\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h5ZC8Y_X78Y\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Patch eight is one of the biggest yet. The photo mode might have excited me more back when we were desperate for Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3 thumbnails on PC Gamer dot com, but the new subclasses are like Christmas and my birthday rolled into one: A new way to play the game for each of BG3&#8217;s core classes, which has already <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/baldurs-gate\/im-a-baldurs-gate-3-honour-mode-sicko-and-these-are-the-4-new-subclass-builds-im-most-excited-for-in-patch-8\/\" target=\"_blank\">set the power gaming sicko in me into overdrive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Consensus from the playtest is that the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bg3.wiki\/wiki\/The_Hexblade\" target=\"_blank\">Hexblade Warlock<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/baldurs-gate\/baldurs-gate-3s-stress-test-update-has-mercifully-made-one-of-its-new-op-cantrips-halfway-balanced-again-but-its-really-still-quite-good\/\" target=\"_blank\">Booming Blade<\/a> spell are the new hotness. I&#8217;ve finally settled on a Hexblade 1 \/ Swashbuckler 11 as my first build to tackle patch eight, though I also have a very dear fondness for the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/bg3.wiki\/wiki\/Arcane_Archer\" target=\"_blank\">Arcane Archer<\/a> subclass from its various forms in D&#038;D videogames over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The back half of April was shaping up to be pretty quiet ahead of May&#8217;s deluge of new releases like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/doom-the-dark-ages-melee-heavy-parry-focused-gameplay-was-nothing-like-i-expected-and-now-im-more-eager-to-play-the-full-thing-than-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\">Doom: The Dark Ages<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/rpg\/3-hours-with-elden-ring-nightreign-helped-me-accept-its-not-the-co-op-fromsoft-game-i-asked-for-but-damn-fun-in-its-own-right\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elden Ring Nightreign<\/a>, but now Larian&#8217;s gone and lobbed a grenade right in the middle of it.
