Not a cutscene?<\/em> What I was watching looked like a gorgeous stop-motion animated short film, but I soon realized the developers from MoonHood Studios were showing me real-time game footage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>The Midnight Walk<\/em> looks so much like a stop-motion film, a la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/interviews\/22721177\/phil-tippett-interview-star-wars-mad-god\">Phil Tippett\u2019s <em>Mad God<\/em><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nspxAG12Cpc\">old Tool videos<\/a>, in part because the game\u2019s characters, monsters, and environments are composed of actual physical materials. Klaus Lyngeled of MoonHood says the studio sculpted some 700 objects, 3D-scanned them in, and turned them into polygonal models. Characters are animated with a stop-motion stutter and the camera has a shallow depth of field to complete the look.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Lyngeled and writer Olov Redmalm describe their first-person, narrative-driven puzzle game as a \u201ccozy horror adventure\u201d full of eccentric weirdos and friendly monsters. The story spans multiple chapters of fairy tales, but there\u2019s a consistent theme among them: warmth, contrast, and bringing light back into a dark world.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/cozy-horror-game-the-midnight-walk-feels-like-walking-through-a-mad-god-world-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>The Midnight Walk<\/em> starts with the game\u2019s main character, the Burnt One, digging themselves out of a grave and repairing their body. As they take their journey through the titular highway the Midnight Walk, they\u2019re joined by a charming and goofy little creature known as Potboy. This guide and companion has a little brazier on its head; using Potboy\u2019s flame and a series of matches, players light torches to bring light to the Midnight Walk and battle enemies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">There\u2019s some puzzle-solving and stealth throughout the game, and even a button dedicated to closing your eyes to just\u2026 listening. (MoonHood promises binaural audio and suggests that players experience <em>The Midnight Walk<\/em> while wearing headphones.) There\u2019s even some \u201cgunplay\u201d \u2014\u00a0the developers showed the Burnt One acquiring a weapon that shoots lit matches, giving the player extended range to battle monsters and solve puzzles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">While much of <em>The Midnight Walk<\/em> lives up to its \u201ccozy\u201d descriptor, largely thanks to Potboy, there\u2019s some real horrific-looking stuff in here too. Every monster and boss is some variation on a twisted freak: There are scurrying cyclopean mutants, giant spider-like terrors, leathery weirdos with their eyes sewn shut, and angry-looking slug creatures with rage issues.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/cozy-horror-game-the-midnight-walk-feels-like-walking-through-a-mad-god-world-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The developer\u2019s listed inspirations (<em>Over the Garden Wall<\/em>, <em>The Nightmare Before Christmas<\/em>, David Lynch, <em>Half-Life 2<\/em>) were apparent throughout my eyes-on preview, but the combination of influences and craft on display makes <em>The Midnight Walk<\/em> feel distinct from the projects that came before it. Suffice it to say, I\u2019m looking forward to MoonHood\u2019s new game, something that wasn\u2019t really on my radar until last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Fortunately, the wait to play will be short. <em>The Midnight Walk<\/em> is coming to PlayStation 5 (with PlayStation VR2 support) and Windows PC via Steam on May 8. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/impressions\/553831\/cozy-horror-game-midnight-walk-release-date\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few minutes into my first look at The Midnight Walk, I thought to myself, Wait, is this actually the game?
