No, not <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/bungies-first-big-hit-classic-marathon-is-free-on-steam-with-marathon-2-and-marathon-infinity-to-follow\/\">that Marathon<\/a>, although props for making the throwback connection. I mean the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/bungie-is-bringing-marathon-back-as-an-extraction-shooter\/\">extraction shooter reboot<\/a> announced in 2023, that we&#8217;ve heard practically nothing about since. Well, we may be about to hear more, and possibly quite soon.<\/p>\n<p>After months of silence following a message from game director Joe Ziegler, who reassured the world that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/bungie-has-finally-broken-its-silence-on-marathon-but-without-the-promised-gameplay-and-practically-no-details-gulp\/\">work on the game is continuing<\/a> but otherwise revealed nothing of note, the Marathon social media accounts fired up today to reveal, well, this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"see-more see-more--clipped\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet hawk-ignore\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">pic.twitter.com\/5k2BaGcHk9<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cantworkitout\/status\/1907840558544072722\">April 3, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"see-more__filter\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And what exactly is <em>this?<\/em> I do not know, but it&#8217;s attracting a lot of attention. The official Xbox account leapt in, as did Discord, although neither had a whole lot to say. Many Bungie followers also chimed in, most expressing excitement that maybe, finally, we&#8217;ll get a proper look at the game, and a few determined to decode what they&#8217;re pretty sure is a hidden message and not just 15 seconds of hype.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming the post does mean an imminent update on the status of Marathon, it&#8217;s long overdue. The announcement of the reboot was followed by (of course) an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/bungies-marathon-arg-is-gorgeous-extensive-and-how-the-hell-do-people-work-this-stuff-out-anyway\/\">ARG<\/a>, and that was pretty much it for nearly a year, until Bungie announced in March 2024 that Ziegler had <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/marathon-reboot-gets-a-surprise-game-director-replacement-as-bungie-is-once-more-denied-a-moments-peace\/\">taken over as game director<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It later came to light that longtime Bungie employee Christopher Barrett, the original director, had been <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/former-marathon-director-christopher-barrett-was-reportedly-fired-by-bungie-for-inappropriate-behavior-with-female-employees\/\">fired<\/a> for alleged inappropriate behavior with female employees at the studio. In December 2024, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/former-destiny-2-and-marathon-director-is-suing-sony-and-bungie-for-usd200-million-over-alleged-wrongful-dismissal\/\">Barrett sued Sony and Bungie<\/a> over claims of wrongful dismissal, a matter that&#8217;s still <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/sony-shares-examples-of-sexually-charged-texts-from-former-destiny-2-director-who-claims-bungie-fired-him-unfairly-to-avoid-paying-millions\/\">working its way through the courts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That dearth of information, not to mention Bungie&#8217;s seemingly endless struggles with Destiny 2 and difficulties with Sony, has not inspired great confidence in the Marathon reboot. PC Gamer&#8217;s Tim Clark, a man who literally <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/yesterday-i-ignored-10-tornado-warnings-to-finish-a-destiny-2-raid-didnt-get-the-exotic-drop-and-disappointed-my-fiancee-is-there-some-sort-of-lesson-here\/\">ignored multiple tornado warnings<\/a> so he could finish a Destiny 2 raid, wrote in 2024 that the catastrophic failure of Concord had him <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/fps\/concords-catastrophic-failure-has-made-me-even-more-worried-about-bungies-marathon\/\">even more worried about Marathon<\/a>\u2014the obvious implication being that he was worried even before Concord flamed out. As he noted, the world is already filled with extraction shooters, and after <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/after-the-catastrophe-of-concord-sony-is-reportedly-cancelling-other-projects-including-a-god-of-war-live-service-game\/\">taking a bath on Concord<\/a>, Bungie parent Sony might not be inclined to show too much patience if Marathon doesn&#8217;t come out of the gate <em>very<\/em> strong.<\/p>\n<p>But that all remains to be seen. For now, gamers are just excited about the prospect of seeing something about the game.
