It\u2019s a stunning effect that enriches the game\u2019s shifting seasonal and weather systems. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nhFkw5CqMN0\">Digital Foundry interview<\/a> with a few of the game\u2019s rendering engineers, the wind isn\u2019t actually wind at all \u2014 it\u2019s invisible fluid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">That\u2019s right: All the realistic wind physics are actually made from a fluid simulation moving through the world. It\u2019s a common technique used in lots of games, and the math has given good effects in games as different as <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/dDgyBKkSf7A\"><em>God of War<\/em><\/a> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2014\/7\/23\/5926447\/dwarf-fortress-will-crush-your-cpu-because-creating-history-is-hard\">Dwarf Fortress<\/a>. <\/em>So why not here, too?<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The Ubisoft developers call <em>Assassin\u2019s Creed Shadows\u2019<\/em> dynamic weather system Atmos, and it was created to support its seasonal theme. As Naoe\u2019s revenge story oscillates between two periods of her life, the seasons shift too. You might be trudging through thick blankets of winter snow covering the Japanese countryside for one moment, and then sprinting through verdant fields after it all melts away in the next. Eventually, you can even change the seasons on command.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Inside Assassin&#039;s Creed Shadows - The NEW Anvil Engine Deep Dive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nhFkw5CqMN0?rel=0\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Combined with its new ray-traced lighting effects, <em>Assassin\u2019s Creed Shadows<\/em> might be one of the best looking games out there. For me, it\u2019s certainly the first time ray tracing has ever felt essential for creating a mood and atmosphere that enriches the storytelling. Digital Foundry\u2019s video has the nitty gritty details, but basically the game injects ray tracing into older technology to more accurately light scenes. Shoji glows while you\u2019re standing inside buildings, and there are darker shadows on objects where the sunlight can\u2019t reach in the open world. With ray tracing off, all the contrast disappears and dulls the world. The experts at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/digitalfoundry-2025-assassins-creed-shadows-excels-on-ps5-pro-tech-review\">Digital Foundry<\/a> call the difference a \u201cgenerational divide in lighting fidelity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Assassin\u2019s Creed Shadows <\/em>is the kind of game that makes a convincing argument for investing in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/review\/474382\/ps5-pro-review-sony-playstation-pssr-gpu-games\">PlayStation 5 Pro<\/a> or a gaming PC with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/review\/540006\/rtx-5080-review-nvidia-graphics-card-gpu\">50-series Nvidia graphics card<\/a>. On the Pro, it can run at a smooth 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled, and it will fully support Sony\u2019s PSSR upscaling technology in a future update. On PC, DLSS and Frame Generation can easily carry you to 60 fps on an RTX 4070 or newer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">And you\u2019ll benefit from all that horsepower because it\u2019s not just the lighting.
