While the news didn\u2019t catch hardcore <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em> players by surprise, Scopely\u2019s acquisition of <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em> was a source of concern, based on responses to the news from multiple communities around the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>What will happen when the game changes hands?<\/em> players wondered, with some assuming the worst. Whether the handover from Niantic to Scopely will have a positive or negative impact on <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>, <em>Pikmin Bloom<\/em>, and <em>Monster Hunter Now<\/em> remains to be seen, but there are valid reasons for players to be concerned.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is Scopely?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Scopely was founded in 2011 and launched its first free-to-play mobile games the following year: <em>Dice with Buddies<\/em>, <em>Jewels with Buddies<\/em>, and <em>Bubble Galaxy with Buddies<\/em>, three titles that draw <em>heavy<\/em> inspiration from <em>Yahtzee<\/em>, <em>Bejeweled<\/em>, and <em>Puzzle Bobble<\/em>, respectively. (Scopely <em>also<\/em> publishes an official <em>Yahtzee<\/em> game, <em>Yahtzee with Buddies<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Since then, Scopely has grown massively in size, and now boasts eight internal studios with more than 2,300 employees worldwide as of 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/games\/the-meaning-of-the-massive-success-of-scopelys-monopoly-go-walter-driver-interview\/\">according to co-founder and co-CEO Walter Driver<\/a>. Some of that growth has been accomplished through acquisitions. In 2019, the publisher acquired Digit Game Studios, the maker of Scopley\u2019s <em>Star Trek Fleet Command<\/em>, and in 2020, it acquired FoxNext Games Los Angeles, the original developer of <em>Marvel Strike Force<\/em>, from Disney.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Scopely Sizzle\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DlmCOV8G37w?rel=0\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Scopely\u2019s library of free-to-play games also includes hits like <em>Stumble Guys<\/em>, <em>Bingo Bash<\/em>, and <em>Scrabble Go<\/em>. But its biggest hit is <em>Monopoly Go!<\/em>, which grossed $3 billion in revenue faster than any other mobile game, according to research firm <a href=\"https:\/\/sensortower.com\/blog\/scopely-monopoly-go-fastest-ever-3b-gross\">Sensor Tower<\/a>. <em>Monopoly Go!<\/em>, which launched in 2023, is routinely one of the top 10 games in terms of revenue, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/sensortower.com\/blog\/top-10-worldwide-mobile-games-by-revenue-and-downloads-in-december-2024\">Sensor Tower<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Saudi-owned Savvy Games Group acquired Scopely in 2023 for $4.9 billion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is Savvy Games Group?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Savvy Games Group was established in 2021 by Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund, the kingdom\u2019s sovereign wealth fund. Savvy Games Group was founded with Saudi Arabia\u2019s \u201ceconomic diversification and social transformation\u201d in mind, according to the group\u2019s CEO, Brian Ward. Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia and supposedly a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.readergrev.com\/p\/great-news-mohammed-bin-salman-massive-gamer\">massive gamer<\/a>,\u201d serves as the PIF\u2019s chairman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Savvy Games Group has spent billions of dollars on game investments over the past four years, with minority ownership stakes in Capcom, Electronic Arts, Nexon, Nintendo, Take-Two Interactive, and the Embracer Group. Savvy also owns esports organization ESL FACEIT Group and a handful of game studios in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The group\u2019s investments in game publishers, developers, and esports organizations have been controversial, similar to accusations of the PIF \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanrights.unsw.edu.au\/students\/blogs\/what-is-sportswashing\">sportswashing<\/a>\u201d \u2014&nbsp;meaning investments in sporting events like the World Cup and the establishment of LIV Golf, a league alternative to the PGA, to improve Saudi Arabia\u2019s global reputation. PIF\u2019s chairman, Mohammed bin Salman \u2014 also known as MBS \u2014&nbsp;is the de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Mohammed has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/26\/us\/politics\/jamal-khashoggi-killing-cia-report.html\">accused of ordering the killing<\/a> of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, according to reports of findings by the CIA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/08\/14\/saudi-arabia-savvy-games-embracer-group\">Axios<\/a> reported in 2023 that Savvy Games Group backed out of a $2 billion deal with Embracer Group that left the games publisher reeling. As a result of that failed deal, Embracer sold off studios, laid off employees, and canceled games.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does Scopely\u2019s acquisition mean for Pok\u00e9mon Go?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">That\u2019s still uncertain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Ed Wu, head of <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em> and a senior VP at Niantic, <a href=\"https:\/\/pokemongolive.com\/post\/moving-to-a-new-home-2025\">said the move to Scopely<\/a> \u201cwill be a positive step\u201d for players and for the game\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cI have every belief Pok\u00e9mon GO will further flourish as part of Scopely, not only into its second decade, but for many more years to come, under the mission of discovering Pok\u00e9mon in the real world and inspiring people to explore together,\u201d Wu said in a statement. \u201cOur new partnership, along with our decade long partnership with The Pok\u00e9mon Company, means we can maintain this long-term focus. Scopely fully believes in our mission and ongoing goal to create the best Pok\u00e9mon GO experience possible. Their focus will be to support our team, providing resources to continue delivering the gameplay you all know and love.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pok\u00e9mon GO: Bringing millions of people together\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YgeMUWFsPhM?rel=0\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Wu added that the \u201centire Pok\u00e9mon GO team is staying together through this partnership,\u201d promising that the \u201csame people who have been guiding and building the game for years will continue doing what we love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Scopely co-CEOs Javier Ferreira and Walter Driver made a similar promise about the future of <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>, Niantic\u2019s other games and services, including Campfire and Wayfarer, and events like Pok\u00e9mon Go Fest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cPlayers can expect that these games, apps, and events will stay true to the experiences they know and love and remain driven by the same dedicated development teams behind these beloved products,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scopely.com\/en\/news\/why-scopely-is-teaming-up-with-niantic-games\">Ferreira and Driver said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cScopely\u2019s role post-closing will be to empower the Niantic game team to pursue their ambitious roadmap by providing resources and support, all in service of giving players more of what they want from their favorite games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Some <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em> players have voiced skepticism of the deal since it was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/news\/525383\/pokemon-go-sale-niantic-scopely\">reported in February<\/a>, fretting that free-to-play monetization through in-game ads and microtransactions would be implemented in a similar way to Scopely\u2019s other mobile games. <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em> already has multiple in-game purchases; players can purchase coins to spend on raid passes, increased storage, and cosmetic items. Niantic has also sold passes to events and special in-game research, and recently introduced a battle pass-like research track for <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">While players have occasionally grumbled over the increasing number of ways to spend money in <em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>, some have expressed concern that a new owner will further exploit them through in-game purchases and pay-to-play mechanics.
