Procedurals are a dime a dozen, of course; for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FBI_(franchise)\">FBI agents alone there\u2019s a whole universe<\/a>. But the art of a murder mystery is something more specific. Plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24086798\/elsbeth-review-weird-detectives-love-em\">episodic procedurals<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/23569789\/poker-face-review-natasha-lyonne\">borrow the idea<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23991050\/columbo-best-episodes-villains-guest-stars-watch\">contain each investigation<\/a> to a single episode; others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/q-and-a\/532018\/paradise-finale-killer-reveal-season-2-plans-interview\">draw it out<\/a> over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23810363\/deadloch-series-season-1-prime-video-watch\">the season<\/a> and stake it all on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23969731\/murder-at-end-of-world-oa-brit-marling-new-tv-batmanglij\">the landing<\/a>. But <em>School Spirits<\/em> on Paramount Plus has managed the impossible, delivering an excellent pulpy murder mystery \u2014 with supernatural secrets to boot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">In the beginning, <em>School Spirits<\/em>\u2019 premise is basic: High school senior Maddie (Peyton List) has been missing for a few days and is presumed dead. The evidence includes blood smears in the boiler room of her high school, and the fact that she\u2019s trapped at the school as a ghost, watching life carry on without her and wondering who it was who killed her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But basic, here, should not be seen as an equivalent of \u201climited.\u201d <em>School Spirits<\/em>\u2019 first season is a ton of fun, providing supernatural hijinks to explore at the same time it pokes around a murder on this mortal coil. With the fellow ghosts of those who died at high school (of which there are startlingly many, ranging from a football QB who died on the field to a girl murdered by her guidance counselor in the \u201960s), Maddie is able to see things that investigators on this side of the spectral veil can\u2019t. Especially once Maddie finds out that she can somehow talk to her best friend, Simon (Kristian Ventura) \u2014\u00a0and, for some reason, <em>only<\/em> Simon \u2014 the show is able to bounce around suspects and planes of existence with ease, burning through details of the case at the same time we\u2019re bonding with the ghostly cast who are all trying their best to move on.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/you-already-missed-the-best-supernatural-murder-mystery-of-the-year-1.jpg\" alt=\"Maddie (Peyton List) sitting at a bus stop while fellow ghosts argue with each other)\" title=\"Maddie (Peyton List) sitting at a bus stop while fellow ghosts argue with each other)\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"Maddie and some ghost pals (as their dated outfits might suggest) in season 1 of &lt;em&gt;School Spirits&lt;\/em&gt; | Photo: Ed Araquel\/Paramount Plus\" data-portal-copyright=\"Photo: Ed Araquel\/Paramount Plus\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Given how much of a mystery lives in the reveal, I approached the end of the first season with some ambivalence. I truly had no idea where it was going, which was exciting; maybe Maddy solved it and future seasons moved on to new ghost-related mysteries. Maybe she didn\u2019t and it kept going, but I wasn\u2019t sure I wanted that either. Across the first season, <em>School Spirits<\/em> buoyantly keeps the mood up, but isn\u2019t afraid to confront the tragedy of its premise: Maddy is stuck watching her mother unravel at the thought of losing her; dark secrets come to light and ruin the lives of those she cared about. Could I handle a second season that pulled me deeper into the tragedy of what did her in?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But at the end of season 1, <em>School Spirits<\/em> delivers a perfect twist. The kind of damn good development that feels like a wave finally cresting \u2014 the kind of thing that makes you see what the show has been working toward, and what it could continue working to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">I won\u2019t spoil anything (I want people to go watch it and talk about it with me), but suffice it to say that <em>School Spirits<\/em> once again did the impossible, with a second season that delivered <em>again<\/em>. When you thought the story might zig, it zagged, finding new pairings to bring out new facets of characters. All the while, it never stopped making its characters feel fun to watch. It felt like a harmonious balance between its genres \u2014 teen show, supernatural exploits, and (of course) murder mystery \u2014 that found a way to enhance the effects of each one.
