Nothing compares, however, to the Suda51-written climax of \u2014 and subsequent response to \u2014 a Super Famicom game known as <em>Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special<\/em>, and it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeextension.com\/news\/2025\/03\/you-can-now-witness-one-of-the-most-depressing-video-game-endings-in-english\">finally playable in English<\/a> thanks to a fan translation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">[<strong>Ed. note<\/strong>: This article contains references to suicide.]<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The patch, which translates just the single-player story mode and removes all other content from the game, is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romhacking.net\/translations\/7388\">ROMhacking.net<\/a> and must be applied to the original <em>Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special<\/em> release, not its revision. It should also work on actual Super Famicom consoles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Goichi \u201cSuda51\u201d Suda may be known today as the video game industry\u2019s closest equivalent to a punk rock front man, but in 1994, he was a rookie at Human Entertainment, which would go on to develop survival horror classic <em>Clock Tower<\/em> a year later. Suda was fresh off his first writing gig, <em>Super Fire Pro Wrestling III: Final Bout<\/em>, when he was given the reins to <em>Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special<\/em>, specifically the single-player \u201cChampion Road\u201d storyline.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SNES Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special - Champion Road #1: Wakamoto Ittetsu\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cZhxVN3JAsw?rel=0\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special<\/em> follows Smith Morio \u2014 named after British rock band The Smiths and their lead singer, Morrissey \u2014 as he progresses from pro wrestling hopeful to superstar and eventually champion. The game was originally envisioned as having multiple endings, but late in development, Suda instead decided to take agency away from the player and settle on just one ending in which Morio, distraught over having given up everything for success, dies by suicide. Human Entertainment apparently received a ton of hate mail over this ending following the game\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cIt was really kind of a big deal at the time,\u201d Suda told <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JgggpKr931U?si=YH0kto6-SWlpz3tX&amp;t=299\">GameSpot<\/a> in 2019. \u201cOnce we put [<em>Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special<\/em>] out, we started getting these huge, cardboard boxes filled with postcards, and almost none of them were nice, fuzzy, happy messages. Most of them were saying stuff like, \u2018What the hell did you do with that ending? What\u2019s wrong with you? Fuck you. Die.\u2019 People were really upset with what we did and it really blew up. It was a huge deal for myself and the company for awhile afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Suda left Human in 1998 to found Grasshopper Manufacture, but was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mHI4ZEY5SR4\">invited to write a sequel<\/a> to \u201cChampion Road\u201d featuring Morio\u2019s son for <em>Fire Pro Wrestling World<\/em> in 2020 by Spike Chunsoft, the current owners of the Fire Pro brand, based on the original story\u2019s notoriety.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/gaming\/534506\/suda51-goichi-suda-super-fire-pro-wrestling-snes-super-nintendo-famicom-english-translation\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As with any art form, video games have had their fair share of controversial endings.
