Among the DOJ&#8217;s suggestions was that Google be forced to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/Google-should-sell-chrome-and-more-recommends-US-DoJ\/\" target=\"_blank\">sell off Chrome and be banned from re-entering the browser market for five years<\/a>. Unsurprisingly, Google didn&#8217;t much care for this plan, and they&#8217;re now trying their luck with the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from Google&#8217;s parent company, Alphabet Inc., met with government officials last week. They urged Trump&#8217;s DOJ to pursue less disruptive measures citing concerns of national security, according to anonymous sources who spoke to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-03-04\/google-urges-trump-doj-to-reverse-course-on-breaking-up-company?sref=HrWXCALa\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Specific proposed remedies were allegedly not addressed, with the company&#8217;s representatives instead making the case for a less hack-happy approach given Google&#8217;s pivotal role within the US economy.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Google spokesperson Peter Schottenfels asserted that this was all very normal, saying, &#8220;We routinely meet with regulators, including with the DOJ to discuss this case. As we\u2019ve publicly said, we\u2019re concerned the current proposals would harm the American economy and national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the Biden administration, the DOJ had previously claimed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/software\/platforms\/us-dept-of-justice-claims-google-corrupted-legitimate-competition-in-the-ad-tech-industry-by-engaging-in-a-systematic-campaign-to-seize-control\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google had &#8220;corrupted legitimate competition<\/a> in the ad tech industry by engaging in a systematic campaign to seize control.&#8221; A <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/the-us-government-is-deciding-whether-to-break-google-apart-and-try-to-end-its-monopoly-on-search\/\" target=\"_blank\">seismic ruling soon followed<\/a> in August, with a federal judge finding that the company had illegally monopolized search and related advertising.<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s vice president, Lee-Anne Mulholland, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/us-department-of-justice-reportedly-recommends-that-google-be-forced-to-sell-chrome-and-boy-does-google-not-like-that-the-government-putting-its-thumb-on-the-scale\/\" target=\"_blank\">didn&#8217;t like the ruling one bit<\/a>, saying, &#8220;The government putting its thumb on the scale in these ways would harm consumers, developers and American technological leadership at precisely the moment it is most needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When news of the DOJ&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/hardware\/Google-should-sell-chrome-and-more-recommends-US-DoJ\/\" target=\"_blank\">proposed, far-reaching remedies<\/a> then surfaced in November, Google and Alphabet&#8217;s president of Global Affairs and chief legal officer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/outreach-initiatives\/public-policy\/doj-search-remedies-nov-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kent Walker wrote in a public blog post<\/a>, &#8220;[The] DOJ chose to push a radical interventionist agenda that would harm Americans and America\u2019s global technology leadership.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;DOJ\u2019s wildly overbroad proposal goes miles beyond the Court\u2019s decision.
