I think I know the purpose of the asterisk in Thunderbolts*<\/em><\/a>, the title of the next Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a> movie. And if I\u2019m wrong I\u2019ll \u2014 OK, I won\u2019t promise to eat any articles of clothing. I\u2019ve seen how that can backfire<\/a>. But I would<\/em> lay money down on it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a longtime comics reader, my answer is not going to surprise you. But with Captain America: Brave New World<\/em><\/a> in the marketing rearview and Marvel Studios going full steam on promoting Thunderbolts*<\/em>, its own Suicide Squad-like<\/a>, it\u2019s a great time to unpack the reasoning for everyone else.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It seems obvious to me that Thunderbolts*<\/em> is really a Dark Avengers movie.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s about past precedent<\/h2>\n

Once upon a time, Marvel Comics had an event called Dark Reign<\/em><\/a> \u2014 though it was less of a discrete crossover and more of a general era of storytelling, defined by Norman Osborn\u2019s rise to significant power in the U.S. government. Osborn (you might know him better as the Green Goblin) used that power, and the public goodwill he\u2019d deceptively won, to go from director of the Thunderbolts to director of SHIELD to director of his own paramilitary force, HAMMER, supposedly an acronym, though Osborn declined to invent an actual name that the letters stood for. (It might be helpful context that Dark Reign<\/em> was published in the waning days of the George W. Bush administration.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the apex of his rise, Osborn made sure that when the federal government decided to end its support for the Avengers, he would be in charge of making a new, government-approved superhero team to replace them. He put together a team of (mostly) supervillains disguised in the masks of real, publicly adored members of the Avengers \u2014 including Bullseye as Hawkeye, Moonstone as Ms. Marvel\/Carol Danvers, Wolverine\u2019s rebellious son Daken as Wolverine, and the Scorpion wearing the Venom symbiote as Spider-Man. He also built his own Iron Man-inspired suit, dubbing himself the Iron Patriot. <\/p>\n

The Dark Avengers went through ups and downs over their history, but were often closely associated with that other<\/em> superteam made up of supervillains, the Thunderbolts. Osborn used both teams to further his personal agendas of fame and retribution. After his fall from grace, the remaining Dark Avengers were even pressed into a new, more redemptive Thunderbolts program, overseen by Luke Cage<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Marvel\u2019s ongoing Thunderbolts<\/em> comics series even changed its name to reflect its new characters, from Thunderbolts<\/em> to Dark Avengers<\/em>. Do you see what I\u2019m getting at here? <\/p>\n

It\u2019s about current patterns<\/h2>\n

The Marvel Cinematic Universe\u2019s Thunderbolts, under the thumb of CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine<\/a>, are already primed to fit the matchy-matchy style of the Dark Avengers, if perhaps not in a full-on \u201cfool the public into thinking this is the real Hawkeye\u201d sort of way.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Between Bucky, U.S. Agent, and Red Guardian, the movie has three potential reflections of Captain America, and an easy successor to Black Widow in Yelena Belova. Who does Sentry<\/a> stand in for? Take your pick: He\u2019s got the godlike power of a Thor and the \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t like me when I\u2019m the Other Guy<\/a>\u201d factor of the Hulk. Also, Sentry was a founding member of Osborn\u2019s original Dark Avengers. <\/p>\n

Thunderbolts*<\/em> simply rhymes too much with Norman Osborn\u2019s superteam to ignore. I fully expect that one of the movie\u2019s final scenes will be its end title card resolving to one that says Dark Avengers<\/em>. But there\u2019s one more reason I\u2019m so sure of my bet. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s about future plans<\/h2>\n

You can\u2019t have an Avengers movie without some folks who call themselves the Avengers. (Well, I suppose you could, but it would be silly.)<\/p>\n

Kevin Feige has said that fans should expect to see the heroes of Captain America: Brave New World<\/em>, Fantastic Four: First Steps<\/em><\/a>, and Thunderbolts*<\/em> in Avengers: Doomsday<\/em><\/a>, the first MCU crossover flick since 2019\u2019s Avengers: Endgame<\/em><\/a>, hitting screens almost exactly a year after Thunderbolts*<\/em>. So who\u2019s putting the \u201cAvengers\u201d in Avengers: Doomsday<\/em>? <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the Fantastic Four*. <\/p>\n

*I\u2019d bet money it\u2019ll be the Thunderbolts \u2014 I mean, the Dark Avengers. <\/p>\n
