He doesn&#8217;t believe it&#8217;s a &#8220;phase&#8221; the business is going through, but rather &#8220;a fundamental transformation of the games industry, a reshape of how games are made and by what kinds of teams.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The industry of two years in the future will not look like the industry of two years ago,&#8221; Olifiers wrote, a prediction of ongoing seismic change that will apparently impact how Bossa develops games in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had to make the painful decision to scale back, focusing on the late-stage production of Lost Skies and its upcoming launch, ensuring the game is successfully released and evolved for its players for the foreseeable future,&#8221; Olifiers wrote in a message posted on LinkedIn. &#8220;Once Lost Skies is established and enjoying live operations, we&#8217;ll reshape into small teams working independently on novel game ideas brought to the players as early as possible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This means saying very difficult goodbyes to extremely talented and treasured colleagues, truly some of the best people in the games industry, who have been part of our journey for a long time. NetEase recently ended funding of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/rpg\/bioware-veteran-mac-walters-will-pause-operations-at-his-new-studio-after-netease-ends-funding-just-1-year-after-it-was-founded\/\">Worlds Untold<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/gaming-industry\/netease-pulls-funding-for-another-studio-former-halo-infinite-design-head-says-jar-of-sparks-is-halting-work-while-it-looks-for-a-new-publisher\/\">Jar of Sparks<\/a> studios and laid off developers <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/games\/third-person-shooter\/just-couldnt-dodge-that-big-boot-i-guess-no-matter-how-big-the-success-of-the-gig-marvel-rivals-developers-in-the-us-say-netease-just-laid-off-their-whole-team\/\">working on Marvel Rivals<\/a> at its Seattle-based studio, and is reportedly looking to make even further cuts in the future.<\/p>\n<p>1This is the second round of layoffs imposed by Bossa: At the end of 2023, the studio laid off roughly <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/bossa-studios-ended-2023-by-laying-off-one-third-of-its-staff\/\">one-third of its employees<\/a> in what Olifiers called &#8220;a perfect storm of events,&#8221; including a large number of big-budget games released near the end of that year, increased operating costs, and delayed funding for new games.<\/p>\n<p>But the studio&#8217;s problems have clearly persisted, and now it seems to be banking big on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/creator-of-defunct-skyship-mmo-worlds-adrift-is-trying-again-with-a-co-op-survival-game-where-your-skyship-is-your-home-in-the-clouds\/\">Lost Skies<\/a>, which was announced in 2023 as a sort of second run at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/worlds-adrift\/\">Worlds Adrift<\/a>, a physics-based multiplayer game first <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/worlds-adrift-is-a-physics-based-multiplayer-game-from-the-i-am-bread-studio\/\">revealed in 2014<\/a>.
