Destiny 2<\/a><\/em> players recently discovered a bug introduced by the game\u2019s Heresy update earlier in February<\/a>. And developer Bungie, on reflection, has decided to leave this bug in. \u201cWe\u2019re going to let this ride,\u201d the developer said in a blog on Friday<\/a>. \u201cA fun example of a bug becoming a feature.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although they all shoot guns and do floaty jumps in the classic Bungie mannyer, Destiny\u2019s three classes all have distinct archetypes: the Titan is defensive and tanky, the Hunter is an agile, stealthy sniper, and the Warlock has some space-wizard flavor. The affected glaives and swords were designed to play within these fantasies and had effects and animations to suit, meaning players could use them both to make unexpected class builds and to break character in their animations and poses.<\/p>\n

Bungie explained that the Destiny team\u2019s initial impulse was to fix the bug, which was introduced by some backend streamlining work. But after they saw how much fun players were having with it, they decided not to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’ve been seeing some great celebrations with the removal of these constraints,\u201d Bungie said. \u201cOur first reactions were focused more towards fixing the issue as we want to retain strong class-based fantasies within Destiny, and the removal of class locks muddies the water a bit. As an example, it’s a bit weird to see a Warlock or a Hunter spawning a mini-bubble or seeing a Titan running like a ninja.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the developer decided to keep it in so players could express themselves. \u201cAnimations may look a bit weird given that the class-based Swords are a bit older, and this can create fun opportunities for players to create videos, art, or other based on classes in different stances,\u201d Bungie said. While the exotic glaives open up \u201cinteresting new buildcrafting opportunities,\u201d Bungie said, the developers will keep a close eye on their performance to make sure their balance isn\u2019t off and \u201cthey feel most powerful on the class they were originally designed for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bungie said it even felt inspired to create some future animations for Titans and Warlocks based on the ninja and sword master fantasies associated with the Hunter swords. \u201cNo promises on timelines or anything like that, but this gives us some fun creative spaces to work with,\u201d the developer said. \u201cWhile we won’t always look at weird bugs and decide to support them as a feature, this felt appropriate!\u201d<\/p>\n
