But that certainly hasn\u2019t stopped the creative minds behind MCU movies from playing around in the borders of X-Men continuity, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/movies\/524445\/captain-america-brave-new-world-red-hulk-nipples\"><em>Captain America: Brave New World<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>is no exception.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Brave New World<\/em> not only introduces a major pillar of the X-Men setting \u2014\u00a0adamantium, a metal that can cut through (almost) anything \u2014 it introduces it in a way that creates a foundation for a whole subcategory of X-Men characters. It\u2019s subtle! It\u2019s deft! It\u2019s interesting! I definitely only noticed it because I\u2019m a giant nerd!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">And it would be great if I believed it was going anywhere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Much of <em>Brave New World<\/em>\u2019s plot revolves around the discovery that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/marvel\/526925\/eternals-mcu-good-actually-hot-take\">the Celestial corpse from <em>Eternals<\/em><\/a>, frozen mid-emergence in the middle of the Indian Ocean, is full of adamantium. The metal itself is just a name-drop in <em>Brave New World<\/em>: Its properties are never really unpacked or demonstrated. It\u2019s just described as a metal that rivals vibranium for indestructibility. Its value is that vibranium is 99% controlled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/comics\/2018\/11\/16\/18098440\/stan-lee-black-panther-wakanda\">a single, isolationist, highly secure nation<\/a> that isn\u2019t interested in sharing, while the motherlode of adamantium is just standing around in an awkward pose in an area of the world many nations could potentially access.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/marvel-movies-are-still-using-x-men-flavor-without-x-men-nutrition-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\"><em>Brave New World<\/em> gets deeper into X-Men lore, however, in centering Japan as the face of the other nations competing with the American government to claim all that adamantium. There are any number of logical, real-world reasons Japan might play this role in this film, from basic geopolitics to more metatextual moviemaking concerns. But Japan as a country is also inextricably interwoven with X-Men continuity, particularly where Wolverine is concerned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Superhero comics are a hodgepodge of everything pop culture thinks is pretty cool, all rolled up in long-lived, interconnected universes. So suffice to say, between U.S. audiences\u2019 long-standing interest in Japanese pop culture and the trappings thereof, and the personal predilections key X-Men creators like Chris Claremont and Frank Miller have for samurai- and ninja-inflected adventures, the X-Men were gonna get linked up with Japan in some way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But also, sometimes, the timing of a general media fad \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chopsocky#Kung_fu_craze_(1970s%E2%80%931980s)\">like the Kung Fu Craze<\/a> of the 1970s and 1980s \u2014 coincides with a creatively fertile period in a single genre, like X-Men comics during that same time. So thanks to the ongoing and connected nature of superhero comics, Wolverine wound\u00a0up as a century-old Canadian lone wolf who nevertheless spent so much dang time in Japan that we\u2019d need a chart to keep track of his Japanese ex-girlfriends, fianc\u00e9es, baby mamas, and sworn enemies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">And with so many Japanese characters in Marvel Comics linked up to Wolverine, Japan itself became linked up with the metal on his bones, through characters like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/entertainment\/2020\/10\/21\/21525624\/marvel-legend-of-shang-chi-equinox-blade-one-shot-comic\">Lady Deathstrike<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/marvel.fandom.com\/wiki\/Akihiro_(Earth-616)\">Daken<\/a> \u2014 because one of the only things Wolverine\u2019s adamantium claws can\u2019t cut through is <em>more adamantium<\/em>. After all, you can only <a href=\"https:\/\/marvel.fandom.com\/wiki\/Kenuichio_Harada_(Earth-616)#Paraphernalia\">invent a magical adamantium-stopping katana<\/a> so many times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">It would be nice to be able to say that this is exactly the kind of dense world-building background available for superhero adaptations to exploit, the kind that makes a world feel lived-in and real. The kind that would make us all go \u201cAha! How clever!\u201d when the MCU eventually reveals that, thanks to Japan taking point on adamantium mining in <em>Brave New World<\/em>, it winds up with a roster of home-grown adamantium-using superheroes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/marvel-movies-are-still-using-x-men-flavor-without-x-men-nutrition-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">But that would require Marvel Studios to do anything with the X-Men before the events of <em>Brave New World<\/em> are as diminished in its fans\u2019 minds as the events of <em>Eternals<\/em> are now. At a certain point, it doesn\u2019t matter if that deft, clever, interesting foundation for future X-Men lore is followed up on, if follow-up doesn\u2019t <em>show<\/em> up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Marvel Studios will undoubtedly eventually stop making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24210563\/deadpool-mcu-canon-multiverse-fox\">feints<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23952407\/marvels-mid-credits-scene-beast-x-men-binary\">putting the X-Men on screen<\/a> and make a full MCU X-Men movie. But with the upcoming blockbuster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/sdcc\/23275883\/marvel-phase-6-secret-wars-kang-dynasty\"><em>Avengers: Secret Wars<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>named after a story arc that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/sdcc\/23275883\/marvel-phase-6-secret-wars-kang-dynasty\">about restarting the Marvel Universe<\/a>, will today\u2019s X-Men references have anything to do with tomorrow\u2019s X-Men continuity?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Until Marvel sets an X-Men movie in the main continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all the X-Men winks currently piling up \u2014\u00a0 in <em>Brave New World<\/em>, as well as in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23344459\/x-men-marvel-movies-mcu\"><em>Ms. Marvel<\/em>, <em>She-Hulk<\/em>, and <em>Doctor Strange<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>\u2014 aren\u2019t X-Men world-building at all.
