She\u2019s starred in a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chaos_Walking_(film)\">dystopian sci-fi thriller<\/a>, a rom-com about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24050732\/daisy-ridley-sometimes-i-think-about-dying-review\">daydreaming of your own death<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Marsh_King%27s_Daughter\">psychological thriller<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magpie_(film)\">neo-noir thriller<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Young_Woman_and_the_Sea\">sports drama<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Inventor_(2023_film)\">an animated movie<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cI feel like I\u2019m drawn to very different things,\u201d Ridley told Polygon in a video interview. While it\u2019s true that her recent projects are spread across a wide group of genres, though, many of them have featured physicality as an important part of her performance. Ridley trained with Olympic swimmer Siobhan-Marie O\u2019Connor in preparation for the historical drama <em>Young Woman and the Sea<\/em>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/24050732\/daisy-ridley-sometimes-i-think-about-dying-review\"><em>Sometimes I Think About Dying<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>required her to stay deathly still for a significant portion of the movie. (\u201cI barely walked,\u201d she jokes.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Next up for her: a more traditional action star role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/dc\/522822\/ryan-reynolds-green-lantern-jokes-martin-campbell-director\">Martin Campbell<\/a>\u2019s <em>Cleaner<\/em>. It\u2019s a <em>Die Hard <\/em>riff where Ridley plays an ex-military window cleaner who has to save the day when environmental activists (led by Clive Owen and Taz Skylar, who gives a scene-stealing performance) threaten the offices of the energy company she cleans windows for, including her brother, who is trapped inside as a hostage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">For Ridley, it was a can\u2019t-miss opportunity to work with one of the industry\u2019s most experienced action directors. Campbell, the director of <em>GoldenEye<\/em>, <em>Casino Royale<\/em>, and the Antonio Banderas Zorro movies, has worked with many of the foremost action stars of the last few decades: Jackie Chan, Liam Neeson, and multiple James Bonds. Ridley was up for the challenge of a physically demanding role in <em>Cleaner<\/em>, which sees her spending a lot of time in a harness suspended above the ground, or fighting opponents in narrow hallways or small rooms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/daisy-ridley-on-becoming-spider-woman-in-her-new-action-thriller-cleaner-1.jpg\" alt=\"Daisy Ridley, bruised and battered, wears a The Strokes T-shirt and fingerless biker gloves in Cleaner\" title=\"Daisy Ridley, bruised and battered, wears a The Strokes T-shirt and fingerless biker gloves in Cleaner\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cI was bruised and battered after <em>Cleaner<\/em>. I was covered in bruises. I&#8217;m pretty sure I ripped something in my shoulder,\u201d she says. \u201cI really delighted in being able to overcome physical things. I love to do as much of it as possible \u2014 with<em> Young Woman and the Sea<\/em>, too. I love watching something where you can feel that the person&#8217;s really done the thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Physical training was a significant part of the <em>Cleaner<\/em> role: \u201cI always do physical prep anyway, because obviously it informs a character emotionally so much. I feel like it brings me close to the character. It&#8217;s the adrenaline we&#8217;re all addicted to. It is such a rush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The most difficult sequence for Ridley came late in the movie, when she had to drop from a ceiling to surprise an opponent before quickly taking them down. Ridley says the stunt was not only physically demanding, but very technical \u2014 she had to land on a tiny mat before executing some complicated choreography, all while making sure to hit the exact right marks for the camera.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/daisy-ridley-on-becoming-spider-woman-in-her-new-action-thriller-cleaner-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cEssentially, I do become Spider-Woman,\u201d she says. \u201cThe adrenaline each time was so high, but it&#8217;s also such a dance with the crew, because you might do the stunt perfectly, but if it focuses out, or the camera is not right, or the camera is perfect and you are just slightly out, [it doesn\u2019t work]. The symbiotic relationship between cast and crew is so beautiful anyway in a film, but particularly with choreography like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">The sequence took 11 takes to film correctly, Campbell told Polygon in a separate video interview. \u201cTo her credit, she stuck with it,\u201d he says. \u201cI know a lot of actors that wouldn&#8217;t do that. They would say, \u2018Well, use my double.\u2019 She wanted to do it herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Campbell says that\u2019s true of most of <em>Cleaner<\/em>. Ridley performed the majority of the stunts herself, including a fight sequence where her character has to leap over a railing to drop onto her opponent. But one of the most demanding parts of the role involved very little interaction with other people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Ridley\u2019s character spends a lot of the first half of the movie in a cleaning cradle, stuck 700 feet above the ground outside the building. (In reality, the <em>Cleaner <\/em>team built a set with three levels of windows and positioned the cradle outside. Campbell says, \u201cIf we had the money, we would\u2019ve built a huge set with four or five stories.\u201d) As the action kicks up and things start to go wrong, the cradle becomes unstable, and Campbell was particularly impressed by Ridley\u2019s ability to bring across the tension of the moment.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/daisy-ridley-on-becoming-spider-woman-in-her-new-action-thriller-cleaner-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"How the effect looks\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arcader.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/daisy-ridley-on-becoming-spider-woman-in-her-new-action-thriller-cleaner-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\" data-caption=\"How it was filmed\" data-portal-copyright=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">\u201cShe does a terrific job,\u201d Campbell says. \u201cShe sells all that tension outside. When she\u2019s outside of the building, of course, everything starts to go wrong on the cradle. Gears start to fall apart, the whole thing starts to tip over, bombs start to drop \u2013 you name it. She\u2019s great at all of that, reacting to that kind of stuff and making it convincing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-none\">Next up for Ridley: leading <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/We_Bury_the_Dead\"><em>We Bury the Dead<\/em><\/a>, an Australian survival horror thriller due to premiere at South by Southwest this March. The premise sounds like there could be some undead ghouls for her to face off against.
